TL;DR: In this paper, the mechanism of supercritical toluene extraction of coal was described by using a two-stage extraction method: extraction at various conditions followed by high-solvent power extraction.
Abstract: This paper describes the mechanism of supercritical toluene (or toluene–tetralin mixture) extraction of coal. The effects of solvent power and solvent residence time in the cell on conversion and liquid yield were examined by using a two-stage extraction method: extraction at various conditions followed by high-solvent power extraction. The effect of tetralin addition on supercritical toluene extraction was also investigated by this method. Furthermore, in situ ESR measurement was conducted to evaluate the variation of radical concentration during supercritical fluid extraction. From these detailed analyses the effects of the solvent power of supercritical fluid on the reactions during extraction, namely on decomposition and polymerization of the primary products from coal decomposition, and on stabilization of the radicals through hydrogen transfer reaction were evaluated.

TL;DR: In this paper, weakly-coking coal was pyrolysed to 500 °C in a stirred autoclave under varying pressures of hydrogen and nitrogen, and the major changes produced by increase in nitrogen pressure were a decrease in tar yield accompanied by increases in gas and, to a smaller extent, in coke yields.

TL;DR: In this article, the influence of coal gasification process conditions on the equilibrium compositions of slag, gas, and low temperature deposits was analyzed, and the influences of gas pressure, temperature, S concentration of the coal, and PO/sub 2/ of the gas upon ash condensation and slag equilibria were presented.
Abstract: Coal gasification process conditions influence the equilibrium compositions of reactor slag, gas, and low temperature deposits, as shown by the approximate calculations in this study. Selective vaporization of the bulk reactor slag may occur when temperatures exceed 1900/sup 0/C and is enhanced by a low PO/sub 2/ of the reactor gas. Metal sulfides and NH/sub 4/Cl may condense at lower temperatures. Capture of S by formation of FeS and CaS in the slag may represent 10-20% of the total S, for the cases considered. The influences of gas pressure, temperature, S concentration of the coal, and PO/sub 2/ of the gas upon ash condensation and slag equilibria are presented.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated coal with a solvent mixture of steam and ammonia, and found that the coal liquid obtained is enriched in hydrogen and has low molecular weight (number-averaged (M/sub n/) = 293, weight-aversaged (m/sub w/) = 338).
Abstract: Liquefaction of coal with a solvent mixture of steam and ammonia was investigated. Concentrations of ammonia in the solvent mixture ranged from 0 to 30 wt %. Ammonia was found to catalyze the conversion of coal. The highest conversion for a Wyodak subbituminous coal was obtained with 2.5% ammonia at 400/sup 0/C and 750 psig. This conversion was 42.5 wt %, on a moisture- and ash-free basis (MAF), representing a 39% increase over the conversion obtained with pure steam at these conditions. The coal liquid obtained is enriched in hydrogen and has low molecular weight (number-averaged (M/sub n/) = 293, weight-averaged (M/sub w/) = 338.
