TL;DR: In this article, secondary vitroplast, produced by treating a Liddell vitrinite concentrate with tetralin in a continuous flow, packed-bed microreactor under a nitrogen pressure of 13.8 MPa at 360, 410 and 460 °C, has been analyzed by i.m. spectroscopy and reflectance microscopy.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the variations in the amounts of alkali and alkaline earth species actually existing on the surface of carbon black in the courses of heat treatment up to 1123 K and steam gasification at 1073 K.

TL;DR: In this article, the impact of the type of coal and mode of operation on product yield and distribution as well as pilot unit operability are discussed, and the implication of these recent results on defining the coal liquefaction reaction paths is discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors presented a temperature-programmed reaction (TPR) technique to analyze the gasification of coal chars, which is suitable to find a slight difference in the reactivity.
Abstract: Recently the authors presented a temperature-programmed reaction (TPR) technique to analyze the gasification of coal chars. This technique is suitable to find a slight difference in the reactivity. By use of this technique they found that some reactive coal chars were gasified in two steps in air. The two-step gasification means that two parallel reactions of different rate parameters are occuring. This phenomenon was associated with heterogeneity in the char, demonstrated by the strong influence of the mineral matter, but the source of the heterogeneity could not be clarified. In this work we performed systematic experiments to find the source of the heterogeneity. Through these experiments it was found that cations such as Ca and Mg produce less reactive carbon during the gasification, which is the source of the two-step gasification observed for some reactive chars

TL;DR: In this article, the estimation of primary aromatic amines (PAA) and other basic nitrogen compounds in coal liquefaction products is described, where aqueous acid extraction was used to isolate basic nitrogen fractions which were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and mass spectrometry (MS).
Abstract: The estimation of primary aromatic amines (PAA) and other basic nitrogen compounds in coal liquefaction products is described. Aqueous acid extraction was used to isolate basic nitrogen fractions which were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and mass spectrometry (MS). Selective chemical derivatization in conjunction with single-ion GC-MS was used to distinguish between the PAA and the isomeric aza heterocycles. The relative merits of the proprietary methylating reagent ‘Methyl-8’ (dimethylformamide dimethylacetal) and a more conventional fluoroacylating reagent for the selective derivatization of PAA are evaluated. Quantitative aspects of the analyses are discussed.
