TL;DR: The authors outline several strategies to achieve a change in the culture of cataloging, the development of enhanced information technologies to support authority control and other cataloging activities, and taking a fresh look at cooperative programs to democratize participation.
Abstract: There is a long tradition of cooperative cataloging in the United States. Despite the existence of numerous cooperative programs in support of cataloging, there is a clear need for improving and increasing the contribution of original cataloging records to national and international databases. The authors outline several strategies to achieve these goals, including a change in the culture of cataloging, the development of enhanced information technologies to support authority control and other cataloging activities, and taking a fresh look at cooperative programs to democratize participation. In addition to these near term opportunities, there are also visions for the future that project more sophisticated expert systems and coordinated endeavors that link collection, processing, preservation, and resource-sharing

TL;DR: The development of online catalogs has focused attention on the importance of defining bibliographic relationships and the uniform title will be a crucial linking device for these defined relationships in future multi-dimensionalOnline catalogs.
Abstract: Uniform titles have an enhanced role to play in the multi-dimensional online catalog systems of the future. Since their early appearance in Panizzi's catalog, the functions of uniform titles have been more clearly articulated and their application has been expanded. As ongoing examination of cataloging principles ha clarified the distinction between item and work, the importance of the uniform title in identifying, distinguishing and collocating works has become clear. The development of online catalogs has focused our attention on the importance of defining bibliographic relationships. The uniform title will be a crucial linking device for these defined relationships in future multi-dimensional online catalogs.

TL;DR: This study presents the results of a survey asking library personnel about their experiences with and attitudes toward MARC record services, finding that although many survey participants expressed satisfaction with the services, they also responded that they would like a greater number of more accurate full bibliographic records.
Abstract: The number of journal titles available in digital format to libraries through aggregators and publisher packages has increased, but library resources to catalog these titles have not kept pace with the increases. More libraries are therefore turning to MARC record service vendors to provide batches of electronic serials bibliographic records, either full or brief. This study presents the results of a survey asking library personnel about their experiences with and attitudes toward MARC record services. Although many survey participants expressed satisfaction with the services, they also responded that they would like a greater number of more accurate full bibliographic records. Also, although a majority of libraries use a separate records approach with the services, a significant minority use a single record approach.
