TL;DR: The study determines the extent to which elements of a bibliographic record were consulted by reference staff members of three ARL libraries and raises the question of whether catalog and database use ought to play a part in cataloging theory and practice.
Abstract: This study determined the extent to which elements of a bibliographic record were consulted by reference staff members of three ARL libraries. It answered the following research questions: (1) For what purposes do reference staff use the catalog and/or database of a bibliographic utility? (2) Are the majority of catalog and utility database searches by the staff for known items? (3) Do the staff members use the author's name as the first access point more often than other access points? and ( 4) What is the incidence of use of each element of the record? The study raises the question of whether catalog and database use ought to play a part in cataloging theory and practice.

TL;DR: This study provides the potential knowledge for an expert system for descriptive cataloging, and a conceptual framework for future investigations of cataloging standards and codes, in terms of the characteristics of individual bibliographic elements and those of separations between elements.
Abstract: Bibliographic data on the title pages are regarded as visual objects, and are examined in terms of the characteristics of individual bibliographic elements and those of separations between elements. Visual properties used in analysis consist of both primitives and coordinates. Three most important elements on the title page found in the study are title proper, author, and publisher. Two most important visual properties that constitute a separation between two bibliographic elements are changes in type-size and the existence of space. This study provides the potential knowledge for an expert system for descriptive cataloging

TL;DR: A course centered on Access Services would focus on each aspect of an Access Services librarian's job, using real-life experiences, scholarly publications, and new technologies to prepare students for success in the workplace.
Abstract: This article defines the elements of Access Services, explains the importance of those aspects in the library, and proposes a course centered on Access Services for library schools. The areas of circulation, interlibrary loan, course reserves, collection maintenance, and public relations are core components of Access Services. Each of those segments is a key aspect of a library's effectiveness and has a direct effect on a patron's perception of the library. Based on analysis of ALA-accredited Library and Information Science programs and their course catalogs, Access Services has not received the same attention as other areas of librarianship such as reference, cataloging, or archives. A course centered on Access Services would focus on each aspect of an Access Services librarian's job, using real-life experiences, scholarly publications, and new technologies to prepare students for success in the workplace.

TL;DR: The results show that approximately 4.4% of the 2009 bibliographic records in the AMICUS catalog exhibit a work-to-work bibliographical relationship.
Abstract: The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of Canadian publications by analyzing their bibliographic relationships based on the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) model. The study indicates frequencies of occurrence of work-to-work bibliographic relationships for manifestations published in 2009 and cataloged in the AMICUS online catalog. The results show that approximately 4.4% of the 2009 bibliographic records in the AMICUS catalog exhibit a work-to-work bibliographic relationship.
