TL;DR: The challenges faced by library administrators in relation to computing technologies are addressed and the three practices that comprise the fundamentals of librarianship are analyzed, namely, cataloging, collection development, and reference work.
Abstract: This article seeks to promote a critical perspective on the present conceptualization of library management and the problems posed by technology. More specifically, it addresses the challenges faced by library administrators in relation to computing technologies. Through the adoption of Ursula Franklin's view of technology as “practice”, the article contrasts the practice of holistic and prescriptive technologies in library contexts. It also addresses the transformations of librarianship and the increasing adoption of prescriptive technological models. To exemplify the ongoing destruction of traditional librarianship, the three practices that comprise the fundamentals of librarianship are analyzed, namely, cataloging, collection development, and reference work.

TL;DR: The FRBR Display Tool was developed to transform bibliographic data found in MARC 21 record files into meaningful displays by grouping them into the work, expression, manifestation, and item FRBR entities.
Abstract: SUMMARY The Network Development and MARC Standards Office (NDMSO) at the Library of Congress contracted for a Functional Analysis of the MARC 21 Bibliographic and Holdings Formats, which is based on the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records model. This study has become a useful tool to analyze MARC data using the work, expression, manifestation, and item FRBR entities. Based on this study, the FRBR Display Tool was developed to transform bibliographic data found in MARC 21 record files into meaningful displays by grouping them into the work, expression, and manifestation FRBR entities. Based on XML technologies, the tool may be altered to meet the needs of individual institutions. The FRBR Display Tool illustrates how the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records may be used to provide useful and practical benefits to libraries and other institutions by providing enhanced displays of bibliographic records in their online catalogs. It also shows how the theoretical portion of the FRBR m...

TL;DR: Examination of differences in modeling component parts of bibliographic resources between two conceptual models in cataloging indicates the model's superiority in consistency to the FRBR model in this respect.
Abstract: This paper examines differences in modeling component parts of bibliographic resources between two conceptual models in cataloging, as a continuation of the previous study that proposed a model giving primacy to expression‐level bibliographic entity First, the model by IFLA Study Group on Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) was examined from the viewpoint of modeling component parts when each part in itself is a resource to be described The examination is done on two types of component parts, a content part and a document part, which are different in terms of whether they are physically independent This results in different structures for these two component types Secondly, by applying the viewpoint to the model that the author proposed earlier, it has become clear that both component types can be modeled basically in the same manner, indicating the model's superiority in consistency to the FRBR model in this respect
