TL;DR: A detailed bidirectional mapping of the MARC 21 linking fields to the Tillett taxonomic divisions to theMARC categorization of the linking fields as chronological, horizontal, or vertical is examined.
Abstract: Bibliographic relationships have taken on even greater importance in the context of ongoing efforts to integrate concepts from the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) into cataloging codes and database structures. In MARC 21, the linking entry fields are a major mechanism for expressing relationships between bibliographic records. Taxonomies of bibliographic relationships have been proposed by Tillett, with an extension by Smiraglia, and in FRBR itself. The present exercise is to provide a detailed bidirectional mapping of the MARC 21 linking fields to these two schemes. The correspondence of the Tillett taxonomic divisions to the MARC categorization of the linking fields as chronological, horizontal, or vertical is examined as well. Application of the findings to MARC format development and system functionality is discussed.

TL;DR: An examination of the overall principles and practices of both reference service and cataloging operations in the promotion of scholarly research points out important differences not just in content available onsite and offsite, but also among necessary search techniques.

TL;DR: The authors describe the tensions existing between those advocating an incremental change to cataloging process and others who desire a bolder library entry into the digital era.
Abstract: There is evidence that many individuals and organizations in the library world do not support the work taking place to develop a next generation of the library cataloging rules. The authors describe the tensions existing between those advocating an incremental change to cataloging process and others who desire a bolder library entry into the digital era.

TL;DR: The access points catalog users choose in finding sound recordings and scores are examined, and how difficulties in music searching influence search strategies are examined.
Abstract: Studying how catalog users search for sound recordings and scores can provide insight into cataloging procedures, OPAC design and reference services. There has been a significant number of studies on general book searching, but little research on how users find music materials. This article examines the access points catalog users choose in finding sound recordings and scores, and how difficulties in music searching influence search strategies. User studies of music-specific material are reviewed and compared with user studies of general book searching. A non-user study is discussed to shed light on the relationship between cataloging practices and user search strategies. Some of the research into new music retrieval methods is considered.

TL;DR: An online survey was distributed to entry-level catalogers with less than ten years of experience and who were currently employed at an Association of Research Libraries member institution, and the majority of respondents felt the practicum was a valuable experience that should be formally required within the library science curriculum.
Abstract: The issue of integrating both theory and practice into the graduate cataloging curriculum has been widely recognized as a longstanding obstacle for educators and practitioners alike. One way students can gain practical cataloging experience is through a practicum. In order to gauge cataloger attitudes about practica, an online survey was distributed to entry-level catalogers with less than ten years of experience and who were currently employed at an Association of Research Libraries (ARL) member institution. Although the experiences ranged widely, the majority of respondents felt the practicum was a valuable experience that should be formally required within the library science curriculum.
