Abstract: Even with today’s computers, a wind tunnel is an essential tool in engineering, both for model tests and basic research. Since the 1930s, when the strong effect of free-stream turbulence on shear layers became apparent, emphasis has been laid on wind tunnels with low levels of turbulence and unsteadiness. Consequently most high performance wind tunnels were designed as closed-circuit types (Fig. 1(a)) to ensure a controlled return flow. However, as will be seen below, it is possible with care to achieve high performance from an open-circuit tunnel, thus saving space and construction cost. ‘Blower’ tunnels (with the fan at entry to the tunnel, Fig. 1(b)) facilitate large changes in working section arrangements; to cope with the resulting large changes in operating conditions, a centrifugal fan is preferable to an axial one. For ease of changing working sections the exit diffuser is often omitted from small blower tunnels, at the cost of a power factor greater than unity. This paper concentrates on the design of small blower tunnels but most of the information is applicable to wind tunnels in general.

Abstract: A seat air conditioning unit includes a seat defining an air passage therein through which air flows toward a seat surface, and first and second blower units for blowing air in the air passage. The first blower unit is provided in a seat bottom of the seat and the second blower unit is provided in a backrest of the seat. The first blower unit includes one of a centrifugal fan, a mixed flow fan, and a regeneration fan. The second blower unit includes an axial flow fan.

Abstract: A solar venturi turbine includes an upwardly oriented venturi tube supported by a venturi support skirt. The venturi tube includes a tapered thermopane glass enclosure which allows sunlight to project therethrough and impinge on a tapered centrifugal fan fronting the thermopane enclosure and mounted within the venturi tube. Located above the centrifugal fan in the neck of the venturi tube is a high velocity fan. A high pressure compressor is mounted above the high velocity fan, and finally a turbine is mounted above the high pressure compressor. A venturi tube outlet flares outwardly directly above the turbine and is mounted to the venturi tube. The turbine is connected to a shaft to drive an electrical generator thereby producing electricity. The sun's rays heat the air within the thermopane glass enclosure causing the reduced density air to rise within the venturi tube and propel the centrifugal fan. The air continues upwardly through the high speed fan and the high pressure compressor increasing in velocity and finally passing through and turning the turbine which is connected to the generator by the turbine shaft. Initial start-up of the solar venturi turbine is with a motor which turns both fans and the high pressure compressor. The solar venturi turbine provides a clean and environmentally harm-free source of electricity without diminishing fossil fuel reserves.
