Abstract: The crude extracts of fruits of Sapindus mukorossi, leaves of Cestrum nocturnm, Cestrum diurnum, and Asclepias curassavica were tested under laboratory conditions against Aedes aegypti, a vector of dengue and chikungunya, for their larvicidal properties. Bioassay experiments carried out with crude alcoholic extracts of Sapindus mukorossi, Cestrum nocturnm, Cestrum diurnum, Asclepias curassavica, LC50 values of 10.05, 9.02, 8.96 and 11.74 ppm respectively. All crude extracts showed positive result for the presence of saponin. This preliminary study suggests that these plants are sources of potential mosquito larvicide, and can be effectively used to produce less expensive and safe compounds to control mosquito vectors in India.

Abstract: A phylogenetic analysis of family Solanaceae was conducted using sequence data from the chloroplast intergenic atpβrbcL spacer. Sequence data was generated from 17 species representing 09 out of 14 genera of Solanaceae from Pakistan. Cladogram was constructed using maximum parsimony method and results indicate that Solanaceae is mainly divided into two subfamilies; Solanoideae and Cestroideae. Four major clades within Solanoideae represent tribes; Physaleae, Capsiceae, Datureae and Solaneae are supported by high bootstrap value and the relationships among them are not corroborating with the previous studies. The findings established that subfamily Cestroideae comprised of three genera; Cestrum, Lycium and Nicotiana with high bootstrap support. Position of Nicotiana inferred with atpβ-rbcL sequence is congruent with traditional classification, which placed the taxa in Cestroideae. In the current study Lycium unexpectedly nested with Nicotiana with 100% bootstrap support and identified as a member of tribe Nicotianeae. Expanded sampling of other genera from Pakistan could be valuable towards improving our understanding of intrafamilial relationships within Solanaceae.

Abstract: The new name Cestrum subumbellatum Vignoli-Silva & M. Nee (Solanaceae) is proposed to replace the later homonym C. campanulatum Francey, and a lectotype is chosen. The taxon is endemic to the Atlantic Forest of eastern Brazil.

Abstract: Cestrum intermedium e uma especie de solanacea nativa do Brasil muito utilizada com fins ornamentais pelas flores atraentes de odor agradavel, porem responsavel por intoxicacoes de bovinos Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar os parâmetros fisico-quimicos e perfil fitoquimico dos extratos das folhas e cascas desta especie. A determinacao dos parâmetros fisico-quimicos foi baseada em metodologias descritas na Farmacopeia Brasileira e a analise fitoquimica dos extratos brutos etanolicos e aquosos de folhas e cascas aplicou reacoes classicas para caracterizacao de grupamentos quimicos. As amostras analisadas encontravam-se dentro dos parâmetros fisico-quimicos estabelecidos pela farmacopeia e a analise fitoquimica apontou a presenca de alcaloides, flavonoides, saponinas, cumarinas, esteroides e triterpenos. As classes metabolicas e parâmetros fisico-quimicos foram estabelecidos pela primeira vez, agregando dados ineditos ao compilado sobre especie.
