TL;DR: In this article, a mobile terminal can identify cellular control channels that can be received by the mobile terminal from a cellular system, by identifying a cellular control channel that could be received from a history list of cellular Control channels that were previously received by mobile terminals.
Abstract: A mobile terminal can identify cellular control channels that can be received by the mobile terminal from a cellular system, by identifying a cellular control channel that can be received from a history list of cellular control channels that were previously received by the mobile terminal. A next cellular control channel that can be received by the mobile terminal then is scanned for, by skipping at least one cellular control channel that is adjacent the cellular control channel that was identified, based on channel allocation rules in the cellular system.

TL;DR: Simulations for representative cellular models show the ability of this heuristic to yield sufficient solutions and will encourage the use of this method for the development of a heuristic channel allocation controller capable of coping with the traffic and spectrum management demands for the proper operation of the next generation of cellular systems.
Abstract: Modern cellular mobile communications systems are characterized by a high degree of capacity. Consequently, they have to serve the maximum possible number of calls while the number of channels per cell is limited. The objective of channel allocation is to assign a required number of channels to each cell such that both efficient frequency spectrum utilization is provided and interference effects are minimized. Channel assignment is therefore an important operation of resource management and its efficient implementation increases the fidelity, capacity, and quality of service of cellular systems. Most channel allocation strategies are based on deterministic methods, however, which result in implementation complexity that is prohibitive for the traffic demand envisaged for the next generation of mobile systems. An efficient heuristic technique capable of handling channel allocation problems is introduced as an alternative. The method is called a combinatorial evolution strategy (CES) and belongs to the general heuristic optimization techniques known as evolutionary algorithms (EAs). Three alternative allocation schemes operating deterministically, namely the dynamic channel assignment (DCA), the hybrid channel assignment (HCA), and the borrowing channel assignment (BCA), are formulated as combinatorial optimization problems for which CES is applicable. Simulations for representative cellular models show the ability of this heuristic to yield sufficient solutions. These results will encourage the use of this method for the development of a heuristic channel allocation controller capable of coping with the traffic and spectrum management demands for the proper operation of the next generation of cellular systems.

TL;DR: This paper proposes a fair multi-channel assignment scheme (FMCA) for distributed cognitive radio networks, and designs a new MAC framework for sensing and access contention resolution, which is integrated into the FMCA scheme.
Abstract: Designing an efficient spectrum assignment (SA) mechanism is a key issue for realizing dynamic spectrum access in cognitive radio network. In multi-channel selection based SA schemes, secondary users (SUs) are able to utilize multiple channels simultaneously to enhance the network throughput. However, a fairness problem may happen if few SUs utilize too many idle data channels that other SUs are left with no idle channels, thus increasing the blocking probability and reducing the fairness. Aiming at improving the network throughput with multi-channel selection capability while maintaining fairness among the SUs, in this paper, we propose a fair multi-channel assignment scheme (FMCA) for distributed cognitive radio networks. For the FMCA scheme, we design a new MAC framework for sensing and access contention resolution, which is integrated into the FMCA scheme. Channel-aggregation (CA) technique is used in each SU to enable the multi-channel selection ability. Considering both of the idle data channel utilization efficiency and the transmit power budget constrained CA ability of each SU, we analytically formulate a channel assignment problem according to the well-known Jain’s fairness criterion. Our objective is to find a channel assignment with maximal fairness index for all SUs. The optimization problem is turned out to be a quadratic integer programming (QIP). According to the definition of Jain’s fairness criterion, we design an algorithm to get the optimal solution of the QIP. With the optimal channel assignment solution, the FMCA scheme is realized in the channel assignment phase of the proposed MAC protocol. Extensive simulation results show that the proposed FMCA scheme gets a good tradeoff between throughput and fairness compared with the existing SA schemes.

TL;DR: Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms not only provide fair resource allocation among users, but also have comparable overall system rate with the scheme maximizing the total rate without considering fairness, much higher rates than the scheme with max-min fairness.
Abstract: A fair and simple scheme to allocate subcarrier, rate, and power for multiuser OFDMA systems is considered. The problem is to maximize the overall system rate, under each user's maximal power and minimal rate constraints, while considering the fairness among users. The approach proposes the fairness and low complexity implementation based on Nash bargaining solutions and coalitions. First, a two-user algorithm is developed to bargain subcarrier usage between both users. Based on this algorithm, we develop a multiuser bargaining algorithm where optimal coalition pairs among users are constructed. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms not only provide fair resource allocation among users, but also have comparable overall system rate with the scheme maximizing the total rate without considering fairness. They also have much higher rates than the scheme with max-min fairness. The proposed algorithms have complexity O(NlogN), where N is the number of subcarriers.
