TL;DR: The paper aims to establish links between landscape aesthetic theory and visual indicators, thus exploring what landscape indicators are really indicating, and includes a discussion on the selection of appropriate landscape indicators through a suggested filtering process.
Abstract: This paper presents one way that landscape visual character can be captured using indicators derived from nine theory-based concepts related to landscape perception. The paper aims to establish links between landscape aesthetic theory and visual indicators, thus exploring what landscape indicators are really indicating. The steps from abstract visual concepts to measurable visual indicators are described, and links are made to theories of landscape preferences and perception. The focus of the paper is on the application of indicators, including a presentation of the possible data sources of the presented indicators. The paper includes a discussion on the selection of appropriate landscape indicators through a suggested filtering process. The relationships between the concepts and the ability of visual indicators to capture changes in landscape character and other issues related to interpretation are discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, a control including radially disposed interaction elements is output, where at least a portion of the interaction elements are associated with clusters of characters and the characters associated with the selected interaction element are disposed radially in relation to the selected interface element.
Abstract: Enhanced character input using recognized gestures, in which a user's first and second gestures are recognized, and a control including radially disposed interaction elements is output. At least a portion of the interaction elements are associated with clusters of characters. When an interaction element is selected, the characters associated with the selected interaction element are disposed radially in relation to the selected interaction element. Using the control, the interaction element and a character associated with the selected interaction element are selected based on the user's recognized first and second gestures, respectively, and the selected character is output.

TL;DR: In this paper, B-type D-branes in linear sigma models with Abelian gauge groups were studied and the most important finding is the grade restriction rule, which classifies representations of the gauge group on the Chan-Paton factor, which can be used to define a family of Dbranes over a region of the Kahler moduli space that connects special points of different character.
Abstract: We study B-type D-branes in linear sigma models with Abelian gauge groups. The most important finding is the grade restriction rule. It classifies representations of the gauge group on the Chan-Paton factor, which can be used to define a family of D-branes over a region of the K\"ahler moduli space that connects special points of different character. As an application, we find a precise, transparent relation between D-branes in various geometric phases as well as free orbifold and Landau-Ginzburg points. The result reproduces and unifies many of the earlier mathematical results on equivalences of D-brane categories, including the McKay correspondence and Orlov's construction.

TL;DR: Pound and Fenollosa as discussed by the authors argued that the Chinese characters had pictorial origins in prehistoric times but these origins have been obscured in all but a few very simple cases, and that native writers don't have the original pictorial meaning in mind as they write.
Abstract: This important and much-disputed essay edited by Ezra Pound from the manuscript of Ernest Fenollosa (and published in Instigations, London, 1920) has since gone through several editions, despite the ridicule of such sinologists as Professor George Kennedy of Yale, who called it "a small mass of confusion. The old theory as to the nature of the Chinese written character (which Pound and Fenollosa followed) is that the written character is ideogrammic-a stylized picture of the thing or concept it represents. The opposing theory (which prevails today among scholars) is that the character may have had pictorial origins in prehistoric times but that these origins have been obscured in all but a few very simple cases, and that in any case native writers don't have the original pictorial meaning in mind as they write. Whether Pound proceeded on false premises remains an academic question. Let the pedants rave. An important extension of imagist technique in poetry was gained by Pound's perception of the essentially poetic nature of the Chinese character as it is still written.

TL;DR: Character amenability of the measure algebra M(G) is shown to be equivalent to G being a discrete amenable group in this paper, and all finite-dimensional extensions of commutative character amenable Banach algebras split strongly.
Abstract: We introduce the notion of character amenable Banach algebras. We prove that character amenability for either of the group algebra L1(G) or the Fourier algebra A(G) is equivalent to the amenability of the underlying group G. Character amenability of the measure algebra M(G) is shown to be equivalent to G being a discrete amenable group. We also study functorial properties of character amenability. For a commutative character amenable Banach algebra A, we prove all cohomological groups with coefficients in finite-dimensional Banach A-bimodules, vanish. As a corollary we conclude that all finite-dimensional extensions of commutative character amenable Banach algebras split strongly.

TL;DR: In this paper, the complexified twisted equivariant K-theory of a space with a compact Lie group action in terms of fixed-point data is described, and the result relates to the Verlinde algebra and to the Kac numerator at q = 1.
Abstract: Using a global version of the equivariant Chern character, we describe the complexified twisted equivariant K-theory of a space with a compact Lie group action in terms of fixed-point data. We apply this to the case of a compact group acting on itself by conjugation and relate the result to the Verlinde algebra and to the Kac numerator at q=1. Verlinde's formula is also discussed in this context.

TL;DR: A novel scheme for recognition of online handwritten basic characters of Bangla, an Indian script used by more than 200 million people, is described here, using a database of 24,500 online handwritten isolated character samples written by 70 persons.
Abstract: We describe here a novel scheme for recognition of online handwritten basic characters of Bangla, an Indian script used by more than 200 million people. There are 50 basic characters in Bangla and we have used a database of 24,500 online handwritten isolated character samples written by 70 persons. Samples in this database are composed of one or more strokes and we have collected all the strokes obtained from the training samples of the 50 character classes. These strokes are manually grouped into 54 classes based on the shape similarity of the graphemes that constitute the ideal character shapes. Strokes are recognized by using hidden Markov models (HMM). One HMM is constructed for each stroke class. A second stage of classification is used for recognition of characters using stroke classification results along with 50 look-up-tables (for 50 character classes).

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present virtue in a fragmented manner, focusing on a few ''signature strengths'' whereas virtue ethicists generally emphasize the unity of character and the development of a full range of virtues.
Abstract: Character is central to positive psychology's efforts to understand and promote human flourishing. Despite the importance of character and ubiquitous references to Aristotle, virtue theory remains underdeveloped in positive psychology. This article elaborates three key aspects of virtue ethics for understanding flourishing: goodness, the unity of character, and character types. Positive psychologists have not developed a substantial concept of what is good, which is essential because virtues are defined as the enduring personal qualities necessary for pursuing particular goods. Positive psychologists present virtue in a fragmented manner, focusing on a few `signature strengths,' whereas virtue ethicists generally emphasize the unity of character and the development of a full range of virtues. Because positive psychologists have not recognized the four character types in addition to virtuous character, they often misconstrue the continent character as virtuous, and many of their descriptors of the good lif...

TL;DR: In this paper, a conjecture generalizing the Cauchy formula for Macdonald polynomials was presented, which encodes the mixed Hodge polynomial of the character varieties of representations of the fundamental group of a Riemann surface of genus g to GL_n(C) with fixed generic semi-simple conjugacy classes at k punctures.
Abstract: We present a conjecture generalizing the Cauchy formula for Macdonald polynomials. This conjecture encodes the mixed Hodge polynomials of the character varieties of representations of the fundamental group of a Riemann surface of genus g to GL_n(C) with fixed generic semi-simple conjugacy classes at k punctures. Using the character table of GL_n(F_q) we calculate the E-polynomial of these character varieties and confirm that it is as predicted by our main conjecture. Then, using the character table of gl_n(F_q), we calculate the E-polynomial of certain associated comet-shaped quiver varieties, the additive analogues of our character variety, and find that it is the pure part of our conjectured mixed Hodge polynomial. Finally, we observe that the pure part of our conjectured mixed Hodge polynomial also equals certain multiplicities in the tensor product of irreducible representations of GL_n(F_q). This implies a curious connection between the representation theory of GL_n(F_q) and Kac-Moody algebras associated with comet-shaped, typically wild, quivers.

TL;DR: In this paper, the combinatorics of alcove walks were used to give a uniform combinatorial formula for Macdonald polynomials for all Lie types, including the Weyl character.
Abstract: In this paper we use the combinatorics of alcove walks to give a uniform combinatorial formula for Macdonald polynomials for all Lie types. These formulas are generalizations of the formulas of Haglund-Haiman-Loehr for Macdonald polynoimals of type GL(n). At q=0 these formulas specialize to the formula of Schwer for the Macdonald spherical function in terms of positively folded alcove walks and at q=t=0 these formulas specialize to the formula for the Weyl character in terms of the Littelmann path model (in the positively folded gallery form of Gaussent-Littelmann).

TL;DR: Goal-Oriented Action Planning (GOAP) is a decision-making architecture that takes the next step, and allows characters to decide not only what to do, but how to do it.
Abstract: A number of games have implemented characters with goal directed decision-making capabilities. A goal-directed character displays some measure of intelligence by autonomously deciding to activate the behavior that will satisfy the most relevant goal at any instance. Goal-Oriented Action Planning (GOAP) is a decision-making architecture that takes the next step, and allows characters to decide not only what to do, but how to do it. But why would we want to empower our characters with so much freedom?

TL;DR: In this article, a merchant conducting a transaction on an account forms transaction data with a sensitive data field, and a replacement character is formed by a modulus operation on the combined character and is stored in the corresponding position in the sensitive field.
Abstract: A merchant conducting a transaction on an account forms transaction data with a sensitive data field. To obscure the account prior to transmitting information about the transaction, for each character in the sensitive data field, a combined character is formed with a character of a generated pad. A replacement character is formed by a modulus operation on the combined character and is stored in the corresponding position in the sensitive data field. A transmission containing the sensitive data field with replacement characters is delivered to the merchant's acquirer.

TL;DR: The Quaternary is characterised by the development of widespread glaciations in mid-northern latitudes as discussed by the authors, and it has attracted vigorous debate as a chronostratigraphic term.
Abstract: The Quaternary is characterised by the development of widespread glaciations in mid-northern latitudes. As a chronostratigraphic term it has attracted vigorous debate. The Quaternary, as accepted by the International Union for Quaternary Research and proposed by the International Commission on Stratigraphy, begins at 2.6 Ma within a 2.8-2.4 Ma interval of profound change in Earth's climate system. The base of the Gelasian Stage at 2.588 Ma offers an existing global stratotype section and point to define the base-Quaternary, and this will necessitate lowering the base of the Pleistocene from its current 1.8 Ma to that of the Quaternary to maintain hierarchical order. This proposal recognises the distinctive qualities of the Quaternary, complies strictly with the hierarchical requirements of the geological time scale, and respects the historical and widespread current usage of the term Quaternary.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors explored the relationship between coaching clients' personality and a self-report measure of the transfer of learning from coaching to the workplace and found that conscientiousness is associated with generalisation and maintenance of outcomes.
Abstract: Using the Five Factor Model of personality and the construct general self efficacy this study explores the relationship between coaching clients’ personality and a self-report measure of the transfer of learning from coaching to the workplace. Positive correlations are found between the application of coaching development and conscientiousness, openness to experience, emotional stability and general self-efficacy. Conscientiousness is also found to be associated with generalisation and maintenance of outcomes. Personality measures may have value as a means for identifying coaching clients who require support in order to make manifest the changes experienced in coaching.

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that χ is principal on a subfield F 2 of size pn/2, and χ ≥ 0 unless ϵ>0.
Abstract: Let χ be a nontrivial multiplicative character of Fpn. We obtain the following results. (1) Let ϵ>0 be given. If B={∑j=1nxjωj :xj∈[Nj+1,Nj+Hj]∩Z,j=1,…,n} is a box satisfying Πj=1nHj>p(2/5+ϵ)n, then for p>p(ϵ) we have, denoting χ a nontrivial multiplicative character, |∑x∈Bχ(x)|≪np-ϵ2/4|B| unless n is even, χ is principal on a subfield F2 of size pn/2, and maxξ|B∩ξF2|>p-ϵ|B|. (2) Assume that A,B⊂Fp so that |A|>p(4/9)+ϵ, |B|>p(4/9)+ϵ, |B+B| 1/2+δ. Then for a nonprincipal multiplicative character χ, |∑x∈I,y∈Dχ(x+y)|
