TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose a fault-tolerant communication of data embodied in a packet, which includes transmission of a starting sequence signal, the starting sequence signals including a first character string followed by a second character string.
Abstract: A system, apparatus, and method for fault-tolerant communication of data embodied in a packet. The communication includes transmission of a starting sequence signal, the starting sequence signal including a first character string followed by a second character string. Transmitting the packet of information after the starting sequence signal has been transmitted, and transmitting an ending sequence signal after the packet has been transmitted, the ending sequence signal including a third character string followed by a fourth character string. The present invention also includes receiving the starting sequence signal transmitted from the transmitting means, and comparing the first and second character strings for the starting sequence signal to first and second pre-determined character strings. A buffer is reset so that it may receive the packet if the first and second character strings match the first and second pre-determined character strings, respectively. Once the buffer is reset, the ending sequence signal is received and the third and fourth character strings of the ending sequence signal are compared to third and fourth pre-determined character strings. If the third and fourth character strings match the third and fourth pre-determined character strings, respectively, the received packet is processed. If the third and fourth character strings do not match the third and fourth pre-determined character strings, the packet is disregarded.

TL;DR: An image collecting system for collecting an image having a target character therein comprising a camera system that captures an image in which the target character is caught in a predetermined area, an image database that stores images captured by the camera system, a character information database that stored character information for identifying a person caught in an image as the target, and a character positioning unit for obtaining position information of the target characters at a certain time as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: An image collecting system for collecting an image having a target character therein comprising a camera system that captures an image in which the target character is caught in a predetermined area; an image database that stores images captured by the camera system; a character information database that stores character information for identifying a person caught in an image as the target character; a character positioning unit for obtaining position information of the target character at a certain time; and an image collecting unit that connects to the image database and the character information database to identify images stored in the image database with the target character therein based on the character information stored in the character information database and the position information of the target character obtained by the character positioning unit, and collect images in which the target character is caught from the images stored in the image database.

TL;DR: In this article, a technique to switch between upper and lowercase alphabetic characters in a wireless communication device measures the period of time in which a numeric key is held in the depressed position by the user.
Abstract: A technique to switch between upper and lowercase alphabetic characters in a wireless communication device measures the period of time in which a numeric key is held in the depressed position by the user. If a numeric key is pressed by the user for a period of time less than a predetermined threshold time (212), the selected alphabetic character is displayed in a default character case. If the selected numeric key is held in the depressed position for a period of time exceeding the predetermined threshold period, the character case is altered and the altered alphabetic character is displayed for the user (214). The user selects the desired alphabetic character by activating a selected numeric key one or more times corresponding to the desired alphabetic letter. If the selected numeric key is held in the depressed position for a period of time exceeding the threshold period during any of the button depressions (212), the system automatically changes to the altered alphabetic character case (214). The alphabetic character case is controlled on a character by character basis such that entry of a new alphabetic character uses the default character case unless the selected numeric key is again held in the depressed position for a period of time exceeding the predetermined threshold.

TL;DR: In this article, a process and system for determining a most likely combination of characters is provided for character data which includes information (120) indicative of at least one handwritten character is obtained, and a Fisher Matching (245) procedure is used on the character data to ascertain the likely characters.
Abstract: A process and system (50) are provided for determining a most likely combination of characters. In particular, character data which includes information (120) indicative of at least one handwritten character is obtained. The character data includes at least one set of segmentation (140) points for the handwritten character. It is possible to compare visual aspects of the handwritten character to visual aspects of each of the previously stored characters for determining likely characters Also , a Fisher Matching (245)procedure can be used on the character data to ascertain the likely characters.

TL;DR: In this article, a modified proof of the inequalities of P6lya-Vinogradov and of Burgess is presented, which displays the latter as a generalization of the former.
Abstract: We give a number of estimates for character sums Z EX(a+b) aE.V bER for rather general sets X, 7 . These give, in particular, a modified proof of the inequalities of P6lya-Vinogradov and of Burgess, which displays the latter as a generalization of the former.
