TL;DR: In this article, the authors presented a series of PMO thin films that combine an ultra-low-k value, a hydrophobic property and a high resistance against aggressive chemical conditions.
Abstract: Periodic mesoporous organosilicas (PMOs) are one of the most promising candidates to be used as ultra-low-k dielectrics in microelectronic devices. In this paper, PMO thin films that combine an ultra-low-k value, a hydrophobic property and a high resistance against aggressive chemical conditions are presented. The films are synthesized via spin-coating of a 1,1,3,3,5,5-hexaethoxy-1,3,5-trisilacyclohexane, hydrochloric acid, water and ethanol mixture using polyoxyethylene (10) stearyl ether as a porogen template. The obtained highly porous films are hydrophobic, crack-free and an ultra-low k-value of 1.8 is achieved. Finally, the chemical resistance of these PMO films against alkaline solutions is investigated in detail and compared with the resistance of mesoporous silicas and PMOs synthesized with cetyl trimethylammonium chloride.

TL;DR: In this article, the synthesis of new PFPE (meth)acrylic oligomers by extending OH-terminated fluorinated chains with urethane groups and reactive acrylic functions is described.
Abstract: Perfluoropolyether (PFPE) structures can be functionalized with acrylic groups using appropriate hydrogenated acrylic monomers: the macromers obtained are highly reactive under UV irradiation, and fluorinated polymers can be obtained. In the first part of this work is described the synthesis of new PFPE (meth)acrylic oligomers by extending OH-terminated fluorinated chains with urethane groups and reactive acrylic functions. The photopolymerization reaction of each product is then reported followed by the characterisation of the main thermal, mechanical and surface properties of UV-cured coatings. The polymers have good thermal resistance and fair mechanical and chemical resistance. More interestingly they show very low refractive index and low surface tension. For these latter properties the products can be advantageously used in highly demanding applications such as photonic devices and nano-patterning. Copyright © 2011 Society of Chemical Industry

TL;DR: In this article, the mechanical and chemical properties of metakaolin activated by alkaline blends of sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide were characterized and two formulations of highest strength were chosen to evaluate their chemical resistance after immersion for 10 days in 0.5 N HCl solutions at 60°C.
Abstract: The Mechanical and chemical properties of inorganic polymers based on metakaolin activated by alkaline blends of sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide were characterized. Twenty-four formulations were elaborated with variable molar composition SiO2/Al2O3 (2.6–3.0), Na2O/Al2O3 (0.55–0.7), and H2O/Solids (0.53–0.57). The effect of the chemical composition on the compressive strength development was first investigated. Infrared spectroscopy showed that the condensed reaction products were formed by bonds of T–O–T (T = Si and/or Al) and water retained. Two formulations of highest strength were chosen to evaluate their chemical resistance after immersion for 10 days in 0.5 N HCl solutions at 60°C; the compressive strength and microstructural changes were characterized. Before the acid exposure the strengths reached up to ~80 MPa, and after acid attack, the loss of strength was a function of the SiO2/Al2O3 ratio. Infrared spectroscopy and electron microscopy suggested that the deterioration was due to the destruction of the polymeric network with migration of Na and Al toward the solution and the incorporation of H3O+ and ingress of Cl− ions in the corroded structure; however, the chemical resistance was good considering the aggressiveness of the acid solutions.

Abstract: In this work, the influence of SiAlON nanoparticles loading level (0–12 wt%) was investigated on the mechanical and chemical properties of epoxy resin-based nanocomposites coatings. The samples were characterized by fracture toughness, chemical, pull off, hardness and abrasion tests, followed by scanning electron microscopy of the fracture surfaces and sample surface after performing a chemical test. Nanoparticles were also characterized by transmission electron microscopy and linear light scattering analysis techniques. Epoxy resin coating based on bisphenol A was treated with polyamine hardener as a curing agent. Fracture toughness measurements were carried out using a single edge notched bend specimens within a three-point bending test at room temperature. Effect of SiAlON nanoparticles on the chemical resistance of epoxy resin was investigated by immersion of samples in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution at 85 °C for 60 days. Results indicated the enhancements in the mechanical properties and chemical resistance of epoxy nanocomposite due to the addition of small parts of SiAlON nanoparticles. The contents of samples with 3 and 5 wt% of SiAlON nanopowders have been considered as optimum contents compared to the other samples. They showed improvement in the crack propagation resistance in chemical solution and fracture toughness tests, both. Enhancment in abrasion resistance was found at either of 3 and 5 wt% SiAlON epoxy nanocomposite samples where they showed 59 and 34% abrasion resistance more than that of the neat resin, respectively.

TL;DR: In this article, the mechanical, chemical and morphological properties of cast polyurethane samples containing barium sulphate, calcium carbonate, kaolin and quartz fillers were investigated.
Abstract: For industrial applications of engineering polymers such as polyurethane, polyamides and polyesters, the addition of suitable reinforcing inorganic fillers is a practical and convenient method to achieve the desirable mechanical and chemical properties. In this study, the mechanical, chemical and morphological properties of cast polyurethane samples containing barium sulphate, calcium carbonate, kaolin and quartz fillers were investigated. In the formulation of these samples, the ranges of inorganic filler were 0–40 phr. The results of mechanical property tests, such as tear resistance, tensile strength, elongation at break, Young’s modulus, hardness and abrasion resistance, were evaluated. The chemical resistance of the samples was determined against xylene and methyl ethyl ketone. The chemical resistance of the filled cast polyurethane was determined by the solubility parameters of polymer/solvent. Finally, the experimental results and SEM images showed that samples containing 30 phr calcium carbonate produced the best results.

TL;DR: In this paper, the additive effect of methyl acrylate (MA), vinyl acetate (VA) and styrene (Sty) on percentage grafting, properties and the behavior of the fiber, in binary vinyl monomeric mixtures was investigated.
Abstract: The reaction parameters for the graft co-polymerization of efficient Butyl acrylate (BA) monomer onto Hibiscus sabdariffa (Roselle) stem fiber were optimized and used to further explore the additive effect of methyl acrylate (MA), vinyl acetate (VA) and styrene (Sty) on percentage grafting, properties and the behavior of the fiber, in binary vinyl monomeric mixtures. The graft co-polymers were characterized by XRD, TGA, DTA, SEM and FTIR techniques and evaluated for physico-chemical changes like moisture absorption, swelling behavior, dye uptake studies and chemical resistance against 1N NaOH and 1N HCl. With increase in percentage grafting the percentage crystallinity, crystallinity index, and hydrophylicity were reduced whereas there was an increase in physico-chemico-thermal resistance, hydrophobicity, miscibility with organic solvents as a result of morphological transformation in these fibers. These modified graft copolymers were then used as reinforcement in phenol-formaldehyde polymer matrix as reinforcement and evaluated mechanically for modulus of elasticity, modulus of rupture, stress at the limit of proportionality and hardness. The composites reinforced with grafted fiber had better strength than raw fiber reinforced composites and phenoplast.
