Abstract: Photochemical solution-phase reactions have been widely applied for the syntheses of nanocrystals. In particular, tuning of the nucleation and growth of solids has been a major area of focus. Here we demonstrate a facile approach to generate atomically dispersed platinum via photochemical reduction of frozen chloroplatinic acid solution using ultraviolet light. Using this iced-photochemical reduction, the aggregation of atoms is prevented, and single atoms are successfully stabilized. The platinum atoms are deposited on various substrates, including mesoporous carbon, graphene, carbon nanotubes, titanium dioxide nanoparticles, and zinc oxide nanowires. The atomically dispersed platinum on mesoporous carbon exhibits efficient catalytic activity for the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction, with an overpotential of only 65 mV at a current density of 100 mA cm−2 and long-time durability (>10 h), superior to state-of-the-art platinum/carbon. This iced-photochemical reduction may be extended to other single atoms, for example gold and silver, as demonstrated in this study. Photochemical synthesis is a popular approach to fabricate metallic nanoparticles, however stabilizing individually-dispersed atoms by this method remains challenging. Here, the authors freeze their precursor solution prior to UV irradiation to obtain atomically-dispersed platinum catalysts with high electrocatalytic performance.

Abstract: Colloidal dispersions of rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium, and platinum are prepared by refluxing the methanol-water solutions of rhodium(III) chloride, palladium(II) chloride, osmium(VIII) oxide, sodium chloroiridate, and chloroplatinic acid, respectively, in the presence of poly(vinyl alcohol) as a protective colloid. The preparations of colloidal dispersions of rhodium are successful in the presence of vinyl polymer with polar group such as poly(vinyl alcohol), polyvinylpyrrolidone, or poly(methyl vinyl ether). Polyethyleneimine, gelatin, polyethylene glycol), and dextran are ineffective as the protective colloid. Water-soluble primary alcohols such as methanol and ethanol, water-soluble secondary alcohols such as 2-propanol, and water-soluble diethers such as 1,4-dioxane are available as reductants for preparation of the colloidal dispersion of rhodium. Abstract: Photocatalytic reaction at 298 K by platinum-loaded titanium(IV) oxide (TiO2−Pt) particles suspended in deaerated aqueous solutions of 2-propanol or (S)-lysine (Lys) was investigated. The TiO2 catalysts with various amounts of Pt loadings were prepared by impregnation from aqueous chloroplatinic acid solution onto a commercial TiO2 (Degussa P-25) followed by hydrogen reduction at 753 K. The physical properties of deposited Pt, e.g., particle size, surface area, and electronic state, were studied respectively by transmission electron microscopy, volumetric gas adsorption measurement, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy as well as infrared spectroscopy of adsorbed carbon monoxide. The increase in Pt amount mainly resulted in an increase of the number of Pt deposits, not of their size. The catalysts were suspended in the aqueous solutions and photoirradiated at a wavelength >300 nm under an argon (Ar) atmosphere.
