TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated whether supercritical carbon dioxide fluid (CISCFE) could treat idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) induced by bleomycin (BLM) and elucidate the related mechanisms.
Abstract: BACKGROUND As a prevalent type of cryptogenic fibrotic disease with high mortality, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) still lacks effective therapeutic drugs. The compounds extracted from buds and flowers of Chrysanthemum indicum Linne with supercritical-carbon dioxide fluid (CISCFE) has been confirmed to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and lung-protective effects. This paper aimed to clarify whether CISCFE could treat IPF induced by bleomycin (BLM) and elucidate the related mechanisms. METHODS Rats (Sprague-Dawley, male) were separated into the following groups: normal, model, pirfenidone (50 mg/kg), CISCFE-L, -M, and -H (240, 360, and 480 mg/kg/d, i.g., respectively, for 4 weeks). Rats were given BLM (5 mg/kg) via intratracheal installation to establish the IPF model. A549 and MRC-5 cells were stimulated by Wnt-1 to establish a cell model and then treated with CISCFE. Haematoxylin-eosin (H&E) and Masson staining were employed to observe lesions in the lung tissues. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and Western blot (WB) were performed to observe changes in genes and proteins connected with the Wnt/β-catenin pathway. RESULTS CISCFE inhibited the proliferation of MRC-5 cells (IC50: 2.723 ± 0.488 μg/mL) and A549 cells (IC50: 2.235 ± 0.229 μg/mL). In rats, A549 cells, and MRC-5 cells, BLM and Wnt-1 obviously induced the protein expression of α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), vimentin, type I collagen (collagen-I), and Nu-β-catenin. The mRNA levels of matrix metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3) and - 9 (MMP-9), two enzymes that degrade and reshape the extracellular matrix (ECM) were also increased while those of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP-1) were decreased. However, CISCFE reversed the effects of BLM and Wnt-1 on the expression pattern of these proteins and genes. CONCLUSION These findings showed that CISCFE could inhibit IPF development by activating the Wnt/β-catenin pathway and may serve as a treatment for IPF after further investigation.

TL;DR: The results of the study pinpoint the mineral elements in different organs of Chrysanthemum indicum L. and will be a scientific basis for fertilization.
Abstract: ICP-AES technique was used to analyse the mineral elements in different organs of Chrysanthemum indicum L. The results show that: (1) The content of K in root, stem, leaves and flower was the highest among macroelements, and can respectively reach to 15.84, 17.74, 31.52 and 37.55 mg x g(-1), while the content of Fe was the highest in microelements in root, stem, leaves and flower, and can respectively reach to 3 219.90, 433.36, 1 519.46, and 1 426.63 microg x g(-1). (2) The accumulation of K, P, Ca, Mg, Mn, Zn and Mo was highest in stem of Chrysanthemum indicum L, and can respectively reach to 240.61, 19.67, 74.87, 18.31 mg x plant(-1) and 893.00, 1 039.08, 2.85 microg x plant(-1), while the accumulation of Na, Fe and Cu was highest in root, and can respectively reach to 11.51 mg x plant(-1), 11 725.27 microg x plant(-1), and 235.24 microg x plant(-1). (3) The proportion of K:P, Ca:Mg, Fe:Mn, Zn:Cu was varied in different organs. The results of the study pinpoint the mineral elements in different organs of Chrysanthemum indicum L. and will be a scientific basis for fertilization.

TL;DR: In the condition of high fat accumulation in tissues, heart, liver and kidney were showed a slight congestion and a bashed cell nucleus and Histological consideration in prunella vulgaris L. and pueraria Radix treatment groups showed a good features in fat accumulation condition than those of other treatment groups.
Abstract: Effects of prunella vulgaris L., chrysanthemum indicum L. and pueraria Radix on plasma lipid composition and histological consideration were investigated in hyperlipidemic rats. Concentration of plasma showed a tendence to decrease in prunella vulgaris L., chrysanthemum indicum L. and pueraria Radix treatment groups. However these values were showed not significantly different from control group. Concentration of plasma FFA in prunella vulgaris L., chrysanthemum indicum L. and pueraria Radix treatment groups showed a lower values compared to control group and concentration of plasma FFA of prunella vulgaris L. and pueraria Radix treatment group showed a lower values than prunella vulgaris L. and chrysanthemum indicum L. treatment group. Concentration of plasma glucose and triglyceride showed a tendence to decrease in prunella vulgaris L., chrysanthemum indicum L. and pueraria Radix treatment groups. However plasma glucose values showed not significantly different from control group. Plasma total cholesterol concentration showed a low and HDL-cholesterol concentration showed a high in prunella vulgaris L. and pueraria Radix treatment group. However LDL-cholesterol concentrations were not significantly different in treatment groups. Histological consideration of heart, liver and kidney in prunella vulgaris L. and pueraria Radix treatment groups showed a good features in fat accumulation condition than those of other treatment groups. However in the condition of high fat accumulation in tissues, heart, liver and kidney were showed a slight congestion and a bashed cell nucleus.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors identify essential oils (EOs) and their concentrations that improved the sensory characteristics of Kochujang by analyzing the effect of the essential oil on the sensory properties of Kochuang.
Abstract: The aim of this study was to identify essential oils (EOs) and their concentrations that improved the sensory characteristics of Kochujang by analyzing the effect of the essential oil on the sensory characteristics of Kochujang. EOs from Chrysanthemum indicum, Chrysanthemum morifolium, Zanthoxylum piperitum and Zanthoxylum schnifolium, which have an outstanding flavor, were added to Kochujang and the resulting products were subjected to sensory evaluation as a function of storage period. The change in the color of Kochujang by the addition of these EOs from Chrysanthemum indicum, Chrysanthemum morifolium, Zanthoxylum piperitum and Zanthoxylum schnifolium was not observed. Kochujang's characteristic flavor was decreased by an increase in the concentrarion of EOs; however, no significant difference was observed when 0.0005% EOs were added relative to the none-additive groups (p<0.05). EOs addition did not affect the hot taste of Kochujang and as the additive quantity increased Kochujang's characteristic taste significantly decreased (p<0.05). After a storage period of 12 weeks, the overall preference of Chrysanthemum indicum, Chrysanthemum morifolium, and Zanthoxylum piperitum was same as the none-additive groups (p<0.05). Therefore, it is suggested that EOs from Chrysanthemum indicum, Chrysanthemum morifolium, and Zanthoxylum piperitum can be applied as additives to improve the characteristic taste and flavor of Kochujang and the recommended concentration level is 0.0005%.
