Abstract: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disorder and is responsible for more than 50% of all dementia cases. There is significant interest in finding new sources of compounds that inhibit acetylcholinesterase (AChE) to be used in the treatment of AD, since only a few AChE inhibitors, such as galanthamine, physostigmine, and tacrine, are available for clinical use. In the present study, ICR mice were treated with a 1 mg/kg scopolamine, which caused impaired cognitive ability. The steady consumption of a water extract of Chrysanthemum indicum Linne flowers for 3 months significantly prevented the scopolamine induced deficit of the spatial cognitive capability of mice. It also improved long-term memory in mice with amnesia induced by scopolamine, as assessed by the Morris water maze and passive avoidance tests. In addition, water extract consumption significantly decreased AChE activity in mouse brain, leading to inhibition of acetylcholine hydrolysis.

Abstract: The characteristic of complete chloroplast (cp) genome sequence of Chrysanthemum lucidum, one of famous insular plant and an endemic to Ulleung Island of Korea, was firstly introduced in the present study. It was 150,985 bp and contained a large single copy region (82,786 bp) and a small single copy region (18,281 bp) which were separated by two inverted repeat regions (24,959 bp). In total, 131 genes were identified and they were consisted of 76 coding genes, eight rRNA genes, and 36 tRNA genes. Comparing to the previously reported Chrysanthemum indicum and C. x morifolium cp genomes, we found complete inversion of SSC region in this taxa. rpoC1 gene was pseudogenes due to 1 bp insertion of poly-A sequence in the 3′ of exon 2.

Abstract: This study investigated the chemical composition of four Korean cultivated Chrysanthemum indicum L. (Gamguk 1 ho, Gamguk 2 ho, Gamguk 3 ho, and Wonhyang) which are used in the food and fragrance industries to identify their volatile flavor compounds. These compounds were analyzed using headspace GC-MS from plant samples cultivated in the same region of Korea (Sancheong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do). A total of 23 compounds were identified, eight of which were common across the four cultivars. The major flavor components in the three Gamguk plants were identified as 3-carene, camphene, β-phellandrene, eucalyptol and (+)-camphor. Eleven compounds, including (+)-camphor at 31.40%, were identified in Gamguk 1 ho. Gamguk 2 ho was found to contain 12 flavor compounds, predominant of which was camphene at 25.60%. Thirteen compounds including (+)-camphor (26.88%) were identified in Gamguk 3 ho, while 17 were detected in the Wonhyang cultivar, including trans-piperitol (47.33%), sabinene, and γ-terpinyl acetate. These results indicate differences in the type and ratio of functional volatile flavor ingredients in Chrysanthemum indicum L. cultivars which is highly valuable as material for fragrance product development.

Abstract: Objective To study the effect of the extract of total flavonoids of chrysanthemum indicum(TFC) on adjuvant arthritis synovial cells. Methods 0.1ml of the complete Freund's adjuvant was subcutaneously injected into the right hind feet pads of the SD rats.24 days after immunity synovial cells in knee joint were treated with TFC and inhibition of proliferation was measured with MTT assay.DNA fragmentations were analyzed with DNA gel electrophoresis.Fluorescence staining of Hoechst 33258 to observe apoptotic body.Results The IC_50 of TFC on synovial cells was 112mg/L.DNA gel electrophoresis showed ladder-like strap.Apoptotic bodies were observed by Hoechst 33258.Conclusion TFC can inhibit proliferation and induce apoptosis in synovial cells,and exerts therapeutical effect on rheumstoid arthritis.
