Abstract: We demonstrate experimentally the electrical electron spin injection from a ferromagnetic metal/tunnel barrier contact into a III–V semiconductor light emitting diode (LED). The injected electrons have in-plane spin orientation. By applying a relatively small oblique external magnetic field this spin orientation within the semiconductor can be manipulated to have a nonzero out-of-plane component. By measuring the resulting circular polarization of the emitted light, we observe injected spin polarization in excess of 9% at 80 K in a CoFe/AlOx/(Al,Ga)As/GaAs surface-emitting spin-LED.

Abstract: A theoretical analysis is given for laser cooling of a two-level atom with magnetic sublevels in the presence of polarization gradients. The optical Bloch equations for the multilevel system are solved numerically for four combinations of polarizations in one-dimensional optical molasses. The light-pressure force on the atom as given by a simple two-level theory is recovered in the absence of polarization gradients, whereas a spatial variation of the polarization is found to lead to a strong cooling force for slow atoms. The increased cooling force is responsible for the recent observations of atoms cooled in optical molasses to temperatures an order of magnitude below the Doppler limit.

Abstract: Polarimetric observations of 300 pulsars have been conducted with the 76-m Lovell telescope at Jodrell Bank at radio frequencies centred around 230, 400, 600, 920, 1400 and 1600 MHz. More than half of the pulsars have no previously published polarization profiles and this compilation represents about three times the sum of all previously published pulsar polarization data. A selection of integrated polarization profiles is provided. Tables of pulse widths and the degree of both linear and circular polarization are given for all pulsars, and these act as an index for all the data, which are available by anonymous ftp in numerical and graphical form.

Abstract: The valley degree of freedom in layered transition-metal dichalcogenides provides an opportunity to extend the functionalities of spintronics and valleytronics devices. The achievement of spin-coupled valley polarization induced by the non-equilibrium charge-carrier imbalance between two degenerate and inequivalent valleys has been demonstrated theoretically and by optical experiments. However, the generation of a valley and spin current with the valley polarization in transition-metal dichalcogenides remains elusive. Here we demonstrate a spin-coupled valley photocurrent, within an electric-double-layer transistor based on WSe2, whose direction and magnitude depend on the degree of circular polarization of the incident radiation and can be further modulated with an external electric field. This room-temperature generation and electric control of a valley and spin photocurrent provides a new property of electrons in transition-metal dichalcogenide systems, and thereby enables additional degrees of control for quantum-confined spintronic devices. A spin- and valley-polarized photocurrent is generated, in an electric double-layer transistor, with a direction and magnitude that depends on the degree of circular polarization of the incident radiation and on an external electric field.
