Abstract: A circularly polarized rectangular stair shaped dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) is presented. The DRA is excited by a narrow rectangular slot and rotated 45/spl deg/ with respect to the sides of the DRA to generate circular polarization. A parametric study of the length to width ratio to optimize the axial ratio bandwidth is given. A 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth of 10.6% is achieved when the length to width ratio is 1.9.

Abstract: The methods for the convenient treatment of partial polarization are discussed. In particular, it is shown (1) how to introduce the “Stokes parameters” and the “Poincare sphere” representation in a direct phenomenological way; (2) how an idealized experimental procedure may illustrate the physical analysis of partial polarization; (3) how the Stokes parameter representation fits naturally into the quantum theory of radiation; (4) how the Stokes method applies to Compton scattering.

Abstract: A linear to radial and/or azimuthal polarization converter (LRAC) has been inserted into the beam delivery of a micromachining station equipped with a picosecond laser system. Percussion drilling and helical drilling in steel have been performed using radially as well as azimuthally polarized infrared radiation at 1030 nm. The presented machining results are discussed on the basis of numerical simulations of the polarization-dependent beam propagation inside the fabricated capillaries.

Abstract: A microwave-frequency microstrip antenna (10) simultaneously usable for both transmitting and receiving microwave-frequency signals that have dual orthogonally polarized components. The components may be either linearly or circularly polarized. A radiating patch (26) is mounted on a first dielectric (12). A ground plane (20) abuts the first dielectric (12) and has two elongated coupling apertures (32,31) at right angles to each other. A second dielectric (22) abuts the ground plane (20) and has embedded thereon two substantially identical conductive planar feed networks (52,51) that are disposed at right angles to each other. At least one additional optional dielectric layer (16,18) having a conductive patch (36,34) may be interposed between the first dielectric (12) and the ground plane (20) for purposes of broadening the bandwidth of the antenna (10). A meanderline polarizer (45) or a 3 dB 90° hybrid coupler (40) may be used for converting from linear polarization to circular polarization.

Abstract: Using terahertz time domain spectroscopy we demonstrate tunable polarization rotation and circular dichroism in intrinsically non-chiral planar terahertz metamaterials without twofold rotational symmetry. The observed effect is due to extrinsic chirality arising from the mutual orientation of the metamaterial plane and the propagation direction of the incident terahertz wave.
