Abstract: A new achievable rate region for the general interference channel which extends previous results is presented and evaluated. The technique used is a generalization of superposition coding to the multivariable case. A detailed computation for the Gaussian channel case clarifies to what extent the new region improves previous ones. The capacity of a class of Gaussian interference channels is also established.

Abstract: Most cellular radio systems provide for the use of transmitter power control to reduce cochannel interference for a given channel allocation. Efficient interference management aims at achieving acceptable carrier-to-interference ratios in all active communication links in the system. Such schemes for the control of cochannel interference are investigated. The effect of adjacent channel interference is neglected. As a performance measure, the interference (outage) probability is used, i.e., the probability that a randomly chosen link is subject to excessive interference. In order to derive upper performance bounds for transmitter power control schemes, algorithms that are optimum in the sense that the interference probability is minimized are suggested. Numerical results indicate that these upper bounds exceed the performance of conventional systems by an order of magnitude regarding interference suppression and by a factor of 3 to 4 regarding the system capacity. The structure of the optimum algorithm shows that efficient power control and dynamic channel assignment algorithms are closely related. >

Abstract: Direct-sequence code-division multiple access (DS-CDMA) is a popular wireless technology. In DS-CDMA communications, all of the users' signals overlap in time and frequency and cause mutual interference. The conventional DS-CDMA detector follows a single-user detection strategy in which each user is detected separately without regard for the other users. A better strategy is multi-user detection, where information about multiple users is used to improve detection of each individual user. This article describes a number of important multiuser DS-CDMA detectors that have been proposed.

Abstract: As a promising downlink multiple access scheme for further LTE enhancement and future radio access (FRA), this paper investigates the system-level performance of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with a successive interference canceller (SIC) on the receiver side. The goal is to clarify the potential gains of NOMA over orthogonal multiple access (OMA) such as OFDMA, taking into account key link adaptation functionalities of the LTE radio interface such as adaptive modulation and coding (AMC), hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ), time/frequency-domain scheduling, and outer loop link adaptation (OLLA), in addition to NOMA specific functionalities such as dynamic multi-user power allocation. Based on computer simulations, we show under multiple configurations that the system-level performance achieved by NOMA is superior to that for OMA.
