TL;DR: In this paper, a small printed antenna with a reduced groundplane effect for ultrawideband (UWB) applications is described, where a notch is cut from the radiator while a strip is asymmetrically attached to the radiator.
Abstract: A small printed antenna is described with a reduced ground-plane effect for ultrawideband (UWB) applications. The radiator and ground plane of the antenna are etched onto a piece of printed circuit board (PCB) with an overall size of 25mmtimes25 mmtimes1.5 mm. A notch is cut from the radiator while a strip is asymmetrically attached to the radiator. The simulation and measurement show that the miniaturized antenna achieves a broad operating bandwidth of 2.9-11.6 GHz for a 10-dB return loss. In particular, the ground-plane effect on impedance performance is greatly reduced by cutting the notch from the radiator because the electric currents on the ground plane are significantly suppressed at the lower edge operating frequencies. The antenna features three-dimensional omni-directional radiation with high radiation efficiency of 79%-95% across the UWB bandwidth. In addition, a parametric study of the geometric and electric parameters of the proposed antenna will be able to provide antenna engineers with more design information

TL;DR: In this paper, a low profile cavity backed planar slot antenna has been described, which is completely constructed at a single substrate by using substrate integrated waveguide technique and grounded coplanar waveguide.
Abstract: A novel design method of low profile cavity backed planar slot antenna has been described in this paper. The whole antenna including backed cavity and feeding element is completely constructed at a single substrate by using substrate integrated waveguide technique and grounded coplanar waveguide. An example with 1.7% bandwidth has been presented, which has 5.4 dBi gain, 16.1 dB front-to-back ratio and -19 dB maximum cross polarized radiation level with its total thickness less than lambda0/50. The proposed antenna keeps good radiation performance of conventional cavity backed antenna and has advantages of conventional planar antenna including low profile, light weight, easy fabrication with low cost and convenient integration with planar circuit.

TL;DR: In this article, a single-fed resonant slot loaded with a series of PIN diode switches constitutes the fundamental structure of the antenna and the antenna tuning is realized by changing its effective electrical length, which is controlled by the bias voltages of the solid state shunt switches along the slot antenna.
Abstract: In this paper the design of a compact, efficient and electronically tunable antenna is presented. A single-fed resonant slot loaded with a series of PIN diode switches constitute the fundamental structure of the antenna. The antenna tuning is realized by changing its effective electrical length, which is controlled by the bias voltages of the solid state shunt switches along the slot antenna. Although the design is based on a resonant configuration, an effective bandwidth of 1.7:1 is obtained through this tuning without requiring a reconfigurable matching network. Four resonant frequencies from 540-890 MHz are selected in this bandwidth and very good matching is achieved for all resonant frequencies. Theoretical and experimental behavior of the antenna parameters is presented and it is demonstrated that the radiation pattern, efficiency and polarization state of the antenna remain essentially unaffected by the frequency tuning

TL;DR: In this article, the design and testing of an aperture-coupled circularly polarized antenna for Global Positioning System (GPS) applications is described, which operates at both the L1 and L2 frequencies of 1575 and 1227 MHz.
Abstract: This paper describes the design and testing of an aperture-coupled circularly polarized antenna for Global Positioning System (GPS) applications. The antenna operates at both the L1 and L2 frequencies of 1575 and 1227 MHz, which is required for differential GPS systems in order to provide maximum positioning accuracy. Electrical performance, low-profile, and cost were equally important requirements for this antenna. The design procedure is discussed, and measured results are presented. Results from a manufacturing sensitivity analysis are also included.

TL;DR: In this paper, an antenna can be used to realize a near-field optical probe that combines spatial resolution well below the diffraction limit with transmission efficiency approaching unity, using a planar bow-tie antenna with an open-circuited gap at its apex.
Abstract: We demonstrate that an antenna can be used to realize a near-field optical probe that combines spatial resolution well below the diffraction limit with transmission efficiency approaching unity. The probe consists of a planar bow-tie antenna with an open-circuited gap at its apex. We present proof-of-principle measurements using microwave radiation and discuss scaling the antenna to the visible optical spectrum.
