16 Nov 1992TL;DR: The authors investigated several pitch prediction algorithms in forward and backward adaptive CELP system in terms of the pitch prediction configuration, the pitch determination algorithms, and the pitch predictor adaptation technique.
Abstract: Compares several pitch prediction algorithms in forward and backward adaptive CELP system. Since a forward adaptation system uses the original speech signal to compute the filter parameters, while a backward adaptation system only uses the locally decoded speech which contains encoding noise, there are important differences between the two systems in the implementation of a pitch prediction algorithm. The authors investigated such pitch prediction strategies in these two systems in terms of the pitch prediction configuration, the pitch determination algorithms, and the pitch predictor adaptation technique. >

19 Apr 2009TL;DR: A novel technique to enhance music signals encoded using a low bit rate CELP coder based on reduction of inter-tone quantization noise for decoded music signals without affecting the quality for speech signals is presented.
Abstract: In this paper we present a novel technique to enhance music signals encoded using a low bit rate CELP coder. The method is based on reduction of inter-tone quantization noise for decoded music signals without affecting the quality for speech signals. The proposed technique consists of two modules. The first module is used to discriminate between stable tonal sounds and other sounds and the second module is used to reduce the inter-tone quantization noise in the stable tonal segments. The inter-tone noise is reduced by means of spectral subtraction. The proposed method is a part of the newly standardised ITU-T G.718 codec.

20 Jun 1999TL;DR: A novel pre-processing algorithm for CELP-coders that aims at perturbing the original signal slightly, such that the perturbed signal is subjectively indistinguishable from the original but can be coded more effectively.
Abstract: A novel pre-processing algorithm for CELP-coders is proposed. The algorithm aims at perturbing the original signal slightly, such that the perturbed signal is subjectively indistinguishable from the original but can be coded more effectively. A key feature of the algorithm is the possibility of controlling the frequency domain properties of the perturbations. Preliminary simulations with the proposed algorithm in combination with a CELP-like coder indicate improvements in terms of segmental SNR and subjective speech quality.

TL;DR: A frame erasure concealment algorithm based on nonlinear regression analysis is presented to minimize speech quality deterioration in code-excited linear prediction (CELP) based coders and obtained improved perceptual evaluation of speech quality (PESQ) scores compared to the conventional methods.
Abstract: Frame erasure is one of the most difficult problems in voice over IP (VoIP) networks and is a major source of speech quality degradation. In this paper, a frame erasure concealment algorithm based on nonlinear regression analysis is presented to minimize speech quality deterioration in code-excited linear prediction (CELP) based coders. We applied the proposed scheme to the ITU-T G.729 standard and obtained improved perceptual evaluation of speech quality (PESQ) scores compared to the conventional methods.
