Abstract: The advances in computer and communication technology have made available several new techniques (packet-switching, satellite multiple access, loops, packet radio, etc.) for communication network design which, in addition to the traditional techniques (point-to-point, multidrop, line-switching, etc.) provide a large gamut of alternatives for network users. At the same time, the increasing competition between common and specialized carriers is making available to the user a variety of leased and switched, voice and data communication services with different qualities and different rates. The user who wants to implement a private communication network is therefore faced with a variety of possible alternatives, corresponding to different techniques and line tariffs.
