Abstract: This paper addresses the joint pricing and network selection problem in cognitive radio networks (CRNs). The problem is formulated as a Stackelberg game, where the primary and secondary operators (POs and SOs) first set the network subscription price to maximize their revenue. Then, users perform the network selection process, deciding whether to pay more for a guaranteed service or to use a cheaper best-effort secondary network, where congestion and low throughput may be experienced. We derive optimal stable price and network selection settings. More specifically, we use the Nash equilibrium concept to characterize the equilibria for the price setting game. On the other hand, a Wardrop equilibrium is reached by users in the network selection game since, in our model, a large number of users must individually determine the network to which they should connect. Furthermore, we study network users' dynamics using a population game model, and we determine its convergence properties under replicator dynamics, which is a simple yet effective selection strategy. Numerical results demonstrate that our game model captures the main factors behind cognitive network pricing and network selection, thus representing a promising framework for the design and understanding of CR systems.

Abstract: Cognitive Radio and Cognitive Networking are emerging fields of research that has the potential for transformative changes to the current status quo. Cognitive systems utilize environmental observations such as spectrum or network conditions to change operational configurations in order to optimize performance at individual node or over end-to-end goals. This paper surveys some of these origin cognitive frameworks and correlates these frameworks to cognitive radio implementations of today. Several definitive implementations and cognitive radio architectures are reviewed and compared. This paper also identifies area of need and suggests directions forward for novel research in this area through interdisciplinary collaboration with the cognitive sciences, integrating prediction and proactive operation into cognitive radio/network architectures and identifying less researched artificial intelligence algorithms that show promise towards cognitive radio architecture.

Abstract: For mobile ad hoc networks used in network-centric operations, there is a growing need for a systematic methodology for analyzing/predicting the performance of the network over the mission duration. With the advance in cognitive networking as a possible means of exploiting unused spectrum, there is now a growing need to study how to design a cognitive network using an automated methodology. In this article we study the concepts and challenges for automatic design/ reconfiguration of cognitive MANETs. We describe the design objectives, imposed constraints, and involved parameters in MANETs. We describe how cognitive techniques can be employed to exploit the unused spectrum in military architectures. We then discuss the challenges facing the design/reconfiguration of a cognitive network and their implications at different network layers. We also describe possible implementation options for designing MANETs that employ cognitive features at all layers.

Abstract: This paper analyzes the effects of realistic relay transceiver on the outage probability and throughput of a two-way relay cognitive network that is equipped with an energy-harvesting relay. In this paper, we configure the network with two wireless power transfer policies and two bidirectional relaying protocols. Furthermore, the differences in receiver structure of relay node that can be time switching or power splitting structure are also considered to develop closed-form expressions of outage and throughput of the network providing that the delay of transmission is limited. Numerical results are presented to corroborate our analysis for all considered network configurations. This paper facilitates us not only to quantify the degradation of outage probability and throughput due to the impairments of realistic transceiver but also to provide an insight into practical effects of specified configuration of power transfer policy, relaying protocol, and receiver structure on outage and throughput. For instance, the system with multiple access broadcast protocol and the power splitting-based receiver architecture achieves ceiling throughout higher than that of the transmission rate of source nodes. On the contrary, a combination of dual-source energy transfer policy and the time division broadcast protocol is contributed the highest level of limiting factor in terms of transceiver hardware impairments on the network throughput.
