14 Sep 2011TL;DR: A method to monitor the blindspot zone using video feeds and warn the driver of any dangerous situation and take a decision on a car presence in theblindspot given the tracked features density is proposed.
Abstract: The goal of this work is to propose a solution to improve a driver's safety while changing lanes on the highway. In fact, if the driver is not aware of the presence of a vehicle in his blindspot a crash can occur. In this article we propose a method to monitor the blindspot zone using video feeds and warn the driver of any dangerous situation. In order to fit in a real time embedded car safety system, we avoid using any complex techniques such as classification and learning. The blindspot monitoring algorithm we expose here is based on a features tracking approach by optical flow calculation. The features to track are chosen essentially given their motion patterns that must match those of a moving vehicle and are filtered in order to overcome the presence of noise. We can then take a decision on a car presence in the blindspot given the tracked features density. To illustrate our approach we present some results using video feeds captured on the highway.

TL;DR: A method that can lower the collision risk of the existing AEB system, which uses only a sensor cluster installed on the vehicle, is realized.
Abstract: Conventional intelligent vehicles have performance limitations owing to the short road and obstacle detection range of the installed sensors. In this study, to overcome this limitation, we tested the usability of a new conceptual autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system that employs vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication technology in the existing AEB system. To this end, a radar sensor and a driving and communication environment constituting the AEB system were simulated; the simulation was then linked by applying vehicle dynamics and control logic. The simulation results show that the collision avoidance relaxation rate of V2V communication-based AEB system was reduced compared with that of existing vehicle-mounted-sensor-based system. Thus, a method that can lower the collision risk of the existing AEB system, which uses only a sensor cluster installed on the vehicle, is realized.

TL;DR: This paper proposes the uniting processing technique which uses the network as a trial, classify the recognition system into some modules from the software point of view, link these modules as the network and make the states of the network correspond to the driving environment.
Abstract: In the rear-end collision avoidance system (RCAS), which incorporates the functions of detecting and reporting distance headway as well as of collision avoidance through the use of automatic braking, the development of the technique to integrate the advanced characteristic of each sensors becomes important. In this paper, we propose the uniting processing technique which uses the network as a trial. We classify the recognition system into some modules from the software point of view, link these modules as the network and make the states of the network correspond to the driving environment. We referred to a immune network when making the network. The immune network is a technological model of the immune mechanism in the living body. We applied this network mechanism to fuse functions of the distance headway, the road lane position and the position of the preceding vehicle obtained by the laser radar and image processing. These three functions are transferred to modules, each module tests mutually, and each certainty degree is changed continuously. This paper describes this network technique and the experimental results.

TL;DR: In this paper, a collision avoidance system for automobiles to be used in freeways and similarly structured traffic environments is under study, where a two-dimensional imaging problem has to be solved because the mere detection of objects in front of a vehicle is not sufficient; potential paths of collision can only be recognized by assigning objects to their surroundings.
Abstract: A collision avoidance system for automobiles to be used in freeways and similarly structured traffic environments is under study. The authors report on concepts, the state of realization and on first experimental results. A two-dimensional imaging problem has to be solved because the mere detection of objects in front of a vehicle is not sufficient; potential paths of collision can only be recognized by assigning objects to their surroundings. While digital wavefront reconstruction was used for angular discrimination, a high-resolution pseudonoise code radar applying a binary phase modulation to a continuous carrier has been implemented for longitudinal resolution. The laboratory evaluation has confirmed the specifications regarding essential system parameters such as radial resolution and sensitivity. >

TL;DR: A detailed surveillance strategy concept for a Rail Collision Avoidance System (RCAS) that is based on direct train-to-train communication that allows vehicle autonomous detection of imminent collisions and a variable transmission rate of messages ensures both, timely warning and an efficient use of communication channel resources.
Abstract: In this paper we present a detailed surveillance strategy concept for a Rail Collision Avoidance System (RCAS) that is based on direct train-to-train communication. Similar to existing systems in air and maritime transport, the RCAS approach allows vehicle autonomous detection of imminent collisions. Designed as a safety overlay system it shall warn and advise train drives in such cases. Apart from an onboard localization unit, which relies on satellite navigation signals, the system architecture does not require any other infrastructure. We will define the content of the broadcasted messages, which shall allow each railway vehicle to assess the traffic situation in its vicinity under all operational conditions. Furthermore a variable transmission rate of messages ensures both, timely warning and an efficient use of communication channel resources in different scenarios like e.g. on regional network lines or in large shunt yards.
