TL;DR: In this paper, the hot exhaust gas stream taken directly from the engine, is passed into a chamber where it reacts with air, preferably in the presence of a reaction promoting element, to avoid direct impingement of the gas against the catalyst bed surface when the latter is utilized.
Abstract: A thermal reactor adapted to receive hot exhaust gases generated as the result of the combustion of a hydrocarbon fuel within an engine. The hot exhaust gas stream taken directly from the engine, is passed into a chamber where it reacts with air, preferably in the presence of a reaction promoting element. However, prior to the reaction stage, the hot gas is urged into a swirling motion and through a constricted passageway whereby to provide through a longer dwell period, better mixing, and avoid direct impingement of the gas against the catalyst bed surface when the latter is utilized.

TL;DR: In this paper, an outwardly opening poppet valve with notches (65) on the perimetal edge of the valve head (48) was used to reduce penetration of the charge into the combustion chamber.
Abstract: A nozzle for the injection of liquid fuel by compressed gas which produces a generally circular first array of gas-entrained fuel droplets and a second array of gas-entrained fuel droplets within the first array. The preferred nozzle has an outwardly opening poppet valve with notches (65) on the perimetal edge of the valve head (48). The division of the fuel-gas charge into two arrays reduces penetration of the charge into the combustion chamber with beneficial effect on combustion efficiency and exhaust emissions. Also disclosed is an arrangement in which an un-notched poppet valve co-operates with a notched valve port to similarly obtain division of the fuel-gas charge into two arrays.

TL;DR: In this paper, the i.c. engine has separate dosing of the air and fuel mixture for the lower load region and the upper load region on the other hand, and the supply is via separate channels.
Abstract: The i.c. engine has separate dosing of the air and/or the fuel mixture for the lower load region on the one hand and the upper load region on the other hand. The supply is via separate channels. The separating wall of the supply channel (3) runs right up to the inlet opening in the combustion chamber (8). The separating wall (9) is also maintained in branch lines of multi-cylinder engines. The smaller channel for the low load supply has a wall in common with the exhaust gas channel.

TL;DR: An ASTM Task Force was formed in 1979 to improve the discriminatory abilities for engine sludge deposits and valve train wear of the ASTM Sequence V-D test and several statistically designed programs were conducted to identify procedural and hardware items to achieve the state objectives as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: An ASTM Task Force was formed in 1979 to improve the discriminatory abilities for engine sludge deposits and valve train wear of the ASTM Sequence V-D test. Several statistically designed programs were conducted to identify procedural and hardware items to achieve the state objectives. The 2.3 liter, four cylinder test engine was updated with electronic fuel injection and high swirl combustion chamber technology. Of the parameters evaluated, increased test length, adjustments of temperatures and control of the rocker cover temperature had the greatest impact on increased test severity. A procedure has been developed that better discriminates between known good and poor engine oils. Field correlation has been improved and expanded to include European experience. An extensive program has been planned to establish field correlation and test precision.
