Abstract: A method for providing network access to a shared access communications medium for a plurality of users includes the steps of conducting predictive admission control by arbitrating user requests for access to the shared medium based on predicted aggregate demands, conducting lookahead scheduling for use in making user channel assignments by forecasting schedule transmission opportunities one or more channels of the shared medium, and balancing load by making channel assignments such that a plurality users are each assigned a respective channel of the shared medium based upon a predicted need. Congestion parameters can predicted for each channel of the shared medium and mapped to a congestion measure using a mathematical function that takes into account packet loss rate, packet delay, packet delay jitter, and available capacity.

Abstract: Multipath propagation for the indoor wireless channel is very complicated and difficult to predict. Several papers have been written attempting to apply an analytical model for this channel to help systems engineers evaluate various architectural components of a wireless system, including modulation, multiple access, and waveform design techniques, without having to resort to empirical data collection. This paper attempts to apply one of these analytical models, known as the /spl Delta/-K model, to help study the performance of an ultra wide band (UWB) system and look at performance trade-offs for different multilevel modulations as well as the benefits of RAKE reception.

Abstract: Improved data transport and management within a network communication system may be achieved by utilizing a transmit timer incorporated within the sender device and exploiting host-level statistics for a plurality of connections between a sender and receiver. The period of the transmit timer may be periodically adjusted based on a ratio of the smoothed round-trip time and the smoothed congestion window, thereby reducing or eliminating bursty data transmission commonly associated with conventional TCP architectures. For applications having a plurality of connections between a sender and a receiver that share a common channel, such as web applications, the congestion window and smoothed round trip time estimates for all active connections may be used to initialize new connections and allocate bandwidth among existing connections. This aspect of the present invention may reduce the destructive interference that may occur as different connections compete with one another to maximize the bandwidth of each connection without regard to other connections serving the same application. Error recovery may also be improved by incorporating a short timer and a long timer that are configured to reduce the size of the congestion window and the corresponding transmission rate in response to a second packet loss with a predefined time period in order to increase resilience to random packet loss.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for determining, monitoring and predicting levels of alertness by detecting microsleep episodes includes a plurality of channel processing units and a channel combining unit. Each of the channel processing units receives an information channel which conveys information associated with the mental and behavorial state of the subject, such as for example an EEG channel, and classifies the information into a distinct category. Such categories may include microsleep, non-microsleep, one or more of a plurality of stages of sleep, one or more of a plurality of stages of wakefulness, or a transition state characterized by a transition from one of the aforementioned states to another. Each of the channel processing units includes a neural network which has been trained with a set of example input/result vector pairs. The example input/result vector pairs are generated by correlating actual information channel outputs with observed fatigue related events such as nodding off, head snapping, multiple blinks, blank stares, wide eyes, yawning, partial and complete prolonged eyelid closures, and slow rolling eye movements.

Abstract: In this paper, we develop a low-complexity channel estimation for hybrid millimeter wave (mmWave) systems, where the number of radio frequency (RF) chains is much less than the number of antennas equipped at each transceiver. The proposed mmWave channel estimation algorithm first exploits multiple frequency tones to estimate the strongest angle-of-arrivals (AoAs) at both base station (BS) and user sides for the design of analog beamforming matrices. Then, all the users transmit orthogonal pilot symbols to the BS along the directions of the estimated strongest AoAs in order to estimate the channel. The estimated channel will be adopted to design the digital zero-forcing (ZF) precoder at the BS for the multi-user downlink transmission. The proposed channel estimation algorithm is applicable to both the non-sparse and sparse mmWave channel environments. Furthermore, we derive a tight achievable rate upper bound of the digital ZF precoding with the proposed channel estimation algorithm scheme. Our analytical and simulation results show that the proposed scheme obtains a considerable achievable rate of fully digital systems, where the number of RF chains equipped at each transceiver is equal to the number of antennas. Besides, considering the effect of various types of errors, i.e., random phase errors, transceiver analog beamforming errors, and equivalent channel estimation errors, we derive a closed-form approximation for the achievable rate of the considered scheme. We illustrate the robustness of the proposed channel estimation and multi-user downlink precoding scheme against the system imperfection.
