Managing emergent knowledge through deferred action design principles

Abstract: Purpose – The aim of this paper is to examine empirically the relevance of the theory of deferred action for knowledge management systems (KMS) design in practice.Design/methodology/approach – The study adopts a case study approach to examine knowledge work and knowledge management in virtual teamwork in a large UK telecommunications company to understand the occurrence of emergent knowledge and how it is managed by virtual team leaders. The section in the company studied is described as a “knowledge intensive organization” dealing with the company's e‐commerce activities.Findings – The analysis confirms the complex adaptive system hypothesis – a complex system adapts to its environment through self‐organization. The data reveal the behaviour of the virtual team to be self‐organizing and adaptive to its environment. A systems perspective as a tool to understand disruption in travel and tourism

Abstract: Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the understanding of systems thinking and its value for strategic foresight and scenario planning to address disruptive forces from the outside, with the outbreak of COVID19 as a case study Design/methodology/approach: This conceptual paper concisely discusses the notion of systems thinking and the concept of complex adaptive systems and puts this in the context of contemporary society in general and travel and tourism in particular Strategic foresight and scenario planning are introduced as an approach to anticipate disruptions in the complex adaptive travel and tourism system Findings: As COVID-19 has demonstrated, travel and tourism is sensitive for disruptions from the outside To ensure long-term resilience and sustainability, a systems approach embedded in strategic foresight and scenario planning is emphasised Practical implications: Strategic foresight and scenario planning is a competence that can be learned Originality/value: Given the present status of COVID-19 and other disruptors on travel and tourism, a resilient approach to the future is necessary;thus, the value of this viewpoint paper is the proposition of an adaptive capacity system This paper offers advice to understand and manage complexity and adaptive systems © 2020, Albert Postma and Ian Seymour Yeoman

Towards Adaptive, Resilient and Self-organizing Peer-to-Peer Systems

Abstract: Peer-to-peer (P2P) systems are characterized by decentralized control, large scale and extreme dynamism of their operating environment. Developing applications that can cope with these characteristics requires a paradigm shift, placing adaptation, resilience and self-organization as primary concerns. In this note, we argue that complex adaptive systems (CAS), which have been used to explain certain biological, social and economical phenomena, can be the basis of a programming paradigm for P2P applications. In order to pursue this idea, we are developing Anthill, a framework to support the design, implementation and evaluation of P2P applications based on ideas such as multi-agent and evolutionary programming borrowed from CAS.

Promoting Disaster Resilience: Operation Mechanisms and Self-Organizing Processes of Crowdsourcing

Abstract: It is often difficult to realize effective governance and management within the inherent complexity and uncertainty of disasters. The application of crowdsourcing, through encouraging voluntary support from the general public, advances efficient disaster governance. Twelve international case studies of crowdsourcing and natural disaster governance were collected for in-depth analysis. Influenced by Complex Adaptive System theory, we explored the self-organizing operation mechanisms and self-organization processes of crowdsourcing within disaster governance. The self-organizing operation mechanisms of crowdsourcing are influenced by the multi-directional interaction between the crowdsourcing platform, the initiator (who commences the crowdsourcing process) and the contractor (who undertakes disaster reduction tasks). The benefits of crowdsourcing for governance structure and self-organization processes in natural disaster governance are reflected in three perspectives: strengthening communication and coordination, optimizing emergency decision-making, and improving the ability to learn and adapt. This paper discusses how crowdsourcing can promote disaster resilience from the perspective of the complex adaptive system to enrich the theoretical research on crowdsourcing and disaster resilience.
