Abstract: Experiments on complex compounds of zinc led to the development of zinc collyria from which the zinc is not precipitated at p H 7.4, which is the approximate p H value of the tear secretion. It was found that citrates, tartrates, and glycine may be added to borate buffers to produce stable zinc collyria with p H values as high as 8.7. A new barbital‐sodium barbital buffer has been devised which has maximum buffer capacity at the approximate p H of the tear secretion.
