Abstract: Condition-based maintenance (CBM) is a maintenance program that recommends maintenance decisions based on the information collected through condition monitoring. It consists of three main steps: data acquisition, data processing and maintenance decision-making. Diagnostics and prognostics are two important aspects of a CBM program. Research in the CBM area grows rapidly. Hundreds of papers in this area, including theory and practical applications, appear every year in academic journals, conference proceedings and technical reports. This paper attempts to summarise and review the recent research and developments in diagnostics and prognostics of mechanical systems implementing CBM with emphasis on models, algorithms and technologies for data processing and maintenance decision-making. Realising the increasing trend of using multiple sensors in condition monitoring, the authors also discuss different techniques for multiple sensor data fusion. The paper concludes with a brief discussion on current practices and possible future trends of CBM.

Abstract: Recently, research has picked up a fervent pace in the area of fault diagnosis of electrical machines. The manufacturers and users of these drives are now keen to include diagnostic features in the software to improve salability and reliability. Apart from locating specific harmonic components in the line current (popularly known as motor current signature analysis), other signals, such as speed, torque, noise, vibration etc., are also explored for their frequency contents. Sometimes, altogether different techniques, such as thermal measurements, chemical analysis, etc., are also employed to find out the nature and the degree of the fault. In addition, human involvement in the actual fault detection decision making is slowly being replaced by automated tools, such as expert systems, neural networks, fuzzy-logic-based systems; to name a few. It is indeed evident that this area is vast in scope. Hence, keeping in mind the need for future research, a review paper describing different types of faults and the signatures they generate and their diagnostics' schemes will not be entirely out of place. In particular, such a review helps to avoid repetition of past work and gives a bird's eye view to a new researcher in this area.

This paper reviews the state of the art in vibration based condition monitoring with particular emphasis on structural engineering applications.

Abstract: Renewable energy sources like wind energy are copiously available without any limitation. Wind turbines are used to tap the potential of wind energy, which is available in millions of MW. Reliability of wind turbine is critical to extract this maximum amount of energy from the wind. We reviewed different techniques, methodologies and algorithms developed to monitor the performance of wind turbine as well as for an early fault detection to keep away the wind turbines from catastrophic conditions due to sudden breakdowns. To keep the wind turbine in operation, implementation of condition monitoring system (CMS) and fault detection system (FDS) is paramount and for this purpose ample knowledge of these two types of systems is mandatory. So, an attempt has been made in this direction to review maximum approaches related to CMS and FDS in this piece of writing.

Abstract: In the previous paper, the authors have demonstrated the high potential of the spectral kurtosis (SK) to detect and characterise non-stationary signals. The present paper brings together these ideas and shows how the SK can be efficiently used in the vibration-based condition monitoring of rotating machines. First, and in contrast to classical kurtosis analysis, the SK provides a robust way of detecting incipient faults even in the presence of strong masking noise. Second, the SK offers an almost unique way of designing optimal filters for filtering out the mechanical signature of faults. The first property is of practical importance for monitoring purposes, whereas the second one proves very useful in diagnostics. Another originality of the paper is the introduction of the concept of kurtogram, from which optimal band-pass filters can be deduced, for instance as a prelude to envelope analysis. All the original findings presented in the paper are illustrated using actual industrial cases.
