Abstract: A real-time data base for power system monitoring and control must provide an accurate and reliable representation of the system state, based on the available measurements, indications and network parameters. The well-established method for achieving this goal is static state estimation, which calculates a best fit of the measurements onto the network model. A new approach is proposed in this paper, wherein state calculation and data validation are performed by a sequential search through the network graph. It is shown that data validation can be achieved without the usual data fitting. The technique requires modest computing times and features novel properties for bad data identification. The method has been implemented and tested on several standard network models. Once data validation is completed, static state estimation may be performed if a best fit of the measurements is desired.

Abstract: Infrared spectroscopy is one of the most fundamental tools of analysis available, and it has the ability to provide most, if not all, of the data required from a used lubricant. In the past successful, yet superficial, application of the technique has been made for condition monitoring of oils during service. The full potential of the application, however, has been limited by the inability to access the total information content of the infrared spectrum. Modern computer-assisted instrumentation now provides the sensitivity and the means to extract the data. This paper describes the technique and illustrates how it can be applied to the analysis of used lubricants.

Abstract: The potential for sea-wave-energy exploitation is high in waters around the UK. Generating stations would typically be 2000 MW in rating, about 30 km long and be situated 10—15 km offshore, the energy being transmitted as electricity in submarine power cables. For such developments to be economic, a high degree of plant availability is necessary so that the maximum amount of energy can be converted and transmitted ashore. This requirement for high availability leads to the need for carefully designed protection and monitoring equipment. In addition, because the plant will be unmanned and because maintenance can be carried out only during short periods of the year, control, operating and monitoring philosophies must be developed, which may be quite different to those normally applied on land-based systems. In the paper, an approach is described which bases control, operating and maintenance around comprehensive condition monitoring of generating plant. Details are given of how information from such instrumentation can be used not only for health monitoring of plant, but also as an aid to operation and to scheduling and design of maintenance procedures.

Abstract: This paper describes a practical new tool to improve the reliability of equipment. It uses a matrix form to help monitor anticipated component faults precisely. The tool provides the practical measures necessary to generate matrix tables that accurately display all causes of failure and all planned programmatic analyses, tests, processes, and inspections. When completed, the matrix tables give users in-depth visibility of the degree of protection against component failure that is provided by the program's preventive measure plans. The matrix form is an excellent technique for tracking, and thereby influencing, the reliability of nonelectronic spacecraft subsystems or components. It has been applied successfully to improve the reliability of nonelectronic spacecraft subsystems and devices. No electronic applications have been tried, but the procedure can be useful in the electronics field, eg. in integrated circuit production planning, and perhaps in process control, inspection or test lines for other electronic components. The drawing of forms, and the recording/manipulation of the data can be computerized. The matrix form procedure can result in a cost increase to a design agency from programmic additions that are inferred from review of the matrices. The major cost to a reliability group is incurred usually in producing detailed fault tree information for the matrices.

Abstract: A condition monitoring system for a gearbox 7 driving a chain conveyor 1 at a coal mine face, comprises a plurality of condition sensitive transducers mounted on the gearbox 7 for the parameters, e.g. temperatures, oil pressure, load, speed, oil level, to be monitored, output signals from the transducers being fed continuously to a data collection unit 9 serving to scan output signals of all connected transducers, the data collection unit 9 incorporating, or being connected to, means to compute various parameters associated with the gearbox and to convert these signals into a form suitable for transmitting to a data receiving source 11 incorporating a display unit, or for local display. The conveyor 1 can be driven at both ends, when elements 6 to 9 are provided at each end of the conveyor and all signals are fed to 11.
