TL;DR: The work community is becoming the most significant community for many people as discussed by the authors, and we are coming to expect our work to satisfy our deeply held needs for wholeness and to help provide spiritual support for our values and our aspirations for personal as well as economic growth.
Abstract: The work community is becoming the most significant community for many people. We are coming to expect our work ‐ where we spend most of our time ‐ to satisfy our deeply held needs for wholeness and to help provide spiritual support for our values and our aspirations for personal as well as economic growth. Reports on original research which supports a growing literature attesting to the centrality of work in meeting both economic and spiritual needs. Spirit refers to the vital, energizing force or principle in the person, the core of self. Respondent managers understand spirit in its secular connotation as defining self meaning and motivation for action. Begins a definition of a model of leadership based on this kind of spiritual relationship, one founded on morality, stewardship and community. Also lists some critical issues that this emerging leadership model faces.

TL;DR: Empowerment has become one of the most common coins in the currency of total quality management (TQM) and it is a word which is making ever more frequent appearances in both the literature and language of TQM, yet, paradoxically, it has remained a word lacking connotation for it has not been subject to precise definition as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: Empowerment has become one of the most common coins in the currency of total quality management (TQM). It is a word which is making ever more frequent appearances in both the literature and language of TQM, yet, paradoxically, it has remained a word lacking connotation for it has not been subject to precise definition. It none the less conveys positive values, it is something which must be strived for and its implementation is unfailingly advocated for the benefits which it can impart to any TQM initiative.

TL;DR: Cult refers to a system of worship and more specifically to an innovative religious system, as opposed to a sect, which is a breakaway group from an established religion as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: Historically, cult refers to a system of worship and more specifically to an innovative religious system, as opposed to a sect, which is a breakaway group from an established religion. During the past 30 years, however, cult has taken on a pejorative connotation arising from disasters such as Jonestown and Waco, and hundreds of media reports of individuals and families devastated by involvement in cults.

TL;DR: The phrase "global change" was introduced by natural scientists in the early 1980s and later used widely by social scientists, policy analysts, engineers and environmental action groups as discussed by the authors, expressing a concern that the world is changing faster than ever before.
Abstract: ‘Global change’ is a phrase introduced by natural scientists in the early 1980s, and later used widely by social scientists, policy analysts, engineers and environmental action groups. The phrase has quite a specific connotation, expressing a concern that the world is changing faster than ever before. ‘Global change’ incorporates an anxiety that by the late 21st century, large-scale demographic, socioeconomic, technological, cultural and environmental conditions will be greatly different from those prevailing today — and probably not at all to our liking. The fact that many of the changes will be global in scale makes the situation even more worrisome. Nation states will not be able to protect themselves individually from harmful effects.

TL;DR: Since the so-called 'Change' of 10 November 1989, Bulgarian historiography has been, with its society as a whole, "in transition" as mentioned in this paper, which has acquired what is at best a desultory connotation in the harsh realities of contempo rary Bulgaria.
Abstract: Since the so-called 'Change' of 10 November 1989, Bulgarian historiography has been, with its society as a whole, 'in transition'. That phrase, it should be noted, has acquired what is at best a desultory connotation in the harsh realities of contempo rary Bulgaria. Blocked by protracted economic crisis and failed political leadership, the road to reform has been uncertain, its destination obscure. The same situation has held true for practically all of the institutions of Bulgarian life, including the profession of history. Some welcome changes and positive achievements have been so much accompanied by problematic trends as to preclude any definitively favourable prognosis.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the need for popular information and communication campaigns in Swaziland as instruments to change attitudes and behavior and suggested an intervention program as an approach to population control in the country.
Abstract: Due to the negative connotation many African communities attach to any form of population control, communication campaigns can not only provide people with information regarding the risks of uncontrolled population growth, but also positively change their attitudes towards population control. The article examines the need for popular information and communication campaigns in Swaziland as instruments to change attitudes and behavior. It also suggests an intervention program as an approach to population control in the country.

TL;DR: The L-diagram as discussed by the authors is a tool for the identification of denotation and connotation as the basis of myth, which was the basis for the development of the L-Diagram.
Abstract: When searching the journal, The Landscape, for evidence of the picturesque, I was thwarted by its covert existence. The conventions of the picturesque are naturalised and taken for granted, reflecting Roland Barthes' concept of myth. Barthes' identification of denotation and connotation as the basis of myth were the foundation for the development of my research tool, the L-diagram.

TL;DR: It would be better if this term ‘parole’ was abolished from the language of psychiatric units because many health workers and patients in psychiatric hospitals now believe that the word ’parole' has a penal connotation.
Abstract: Earlier this century a parole system was widely used in psychiatric hospitals. Now the system has almost disappeared from adult general psychiatric units. In forensic psychiatric units a parole system is still widespread although it appears to be declining. In 1967 a parole system was first introduced into British prisons and it continues today. Many health workers and patients in psychiatric hospitals now believe that the word ‘parole’ has a penal connotation. Maybe it would be better if this term was abolished from the language of psychiatric units. A preferred alternative is ‘leave’.
