TL;DR: In this paper, the authors focus on the dual role of consumers' need for uniqueness and their need for social assimilation and support the notion that expressing uniqueness via con- sumption behavior is a safe way to achieve a different sense of being without damaging an individual's sense of social integration.
Abstract: Uniqueness has a positive and attractive connotation, but being too unique can result in social sanctions. This paper focuses on the dual role of consumers' need for uniqueness. The findings of two studies in Israel support the notion that expressing uniqueness via con- sumption behavior is a safe way to achieve a different sense of being without damaging an individual's sense of social assimilation. The results imply a possible new theoretical view of the interplay between consumers' need for uniqueness and their need for social assimilation. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract: Field research and a laboratory study were conducted to empirically examine the effects of brand relevance, connotation, and pronunciation on consumers9 preferences for new brand names. The context theory of memory retrieval and the simplicity principle provided the foundation for our research hypotheses. In both cases, study results supported the main effects of relevance, connotation, and pronunciation of brand names on consumers9 brand preference. In addition, results showed that the contribution of connotation will be attenuated if the brand name is difficult to pronounce.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors start from the intuitive connection between enjoying the basic liberties and being a free citizen and identify three constraints that that connotation supports: that basic liberties should be personally significant, equally co-enjoyable by all and as numerous as those other constraints allow.
Abstract: How to characterize the basic liberties other than by giving a few examples and adding an 'and so on'? This paper starts from the intuitive connection between enjoying the basic liberties and being a free citizen. It identifies three constraints that that connotation supports: that the basic liberties should be personally significant, equally co-enjoyable by all and as numerous as those other constraints allow. And then it explores the shape that those constraints would impose on the basic liberties, elaborating in particular on the implications of equal co-enjoyment.

TL;DR: This article argued that the human propensity to create meaning lies largely in this representational ambiguity, which underlies all forms of symbolism, and argued that any attempt to emulate human ways of thinking, for example in Artificial Intelligence research, should take this paradoxical factor into account.
Abstract: The creation of meaning to interpret and communicate perceived phenomena is a fundamental trait of human intelligence. This article explains some major ways in which this is achieved, focusing on language and the perception of embodiment. It examines the representational aspects of natural language, which account for the ambiguity of linguistic signs, and describes how these manifest in metaphor, connotation and emotive expression. The article argues that the human propensity to create meaning lies largely in this representational ambiguity, which underlies all forms of symbolism. However, the ambiguity of natural language has a paradoxical side, since it is also at fault in many shortcomings of human communication, such as misunderstanding and prejudicial stereotyping. This article argues that any attempt to emulate human ways of thinking, for example in Artificial Intelligence research, should take this paradoxical factor into account.

TL;DR: The authors propose that mental objects are dynamically changing sets of potentially interchangeable connotations, which can be seen as a way of transferring connotation between different mental objects and situations. But most models of analogy seem devoid of both semantics and relevance extraction, postulating analogy as a one-toone mapping devoid of connotation transfer.
Abstract: Analogy-making is an ability with which we can abstract from surface similarities and perceive deep, meaningful similarities between different mental objects and situations. I propose that mental objects are dynamically changing sets of potentially interchangeable connotations. Unfortunately, most models of analogy seem devoid of both semantics and relevance-extraction, postulating analogy as a one-to-one mapping devoid of connotation transfer.

TL;DR: Sahet Alqaryoun as discussed by the authors, a public open space in a residential neighborhood in the historic city of Nablus, West Bank, has been investigated through investigating various stakeholders and users of this place, starting fromindividuals to the families living in this neighborhood or even the municipality and professionals who are responsible for any future intervention proposed for Sahet AlQaryoun.
Abstract: The landscape of the environment we live in is an image of our common humanity. The sense of place individuals and people as a whole have is both a biological response to the surrounding physical environment and a cultural creation. People get attached to places that are critical to their well-being or cause them distress. This paper sketches the story of ‘ Sahet Alqaryoun’ , a public open space in a residential neighborhood in the historic city of Nablus, West Bank. The question of how ‘Sahet Alqaryoun’ as an open public space is appropriated by the various segments of the population, and how this has been changing overtime is addressed here through investigating various stakeholders and users of this place, starting from individuals to the families living in this neighborhood or even the municipality and professionals who are responsible for any future intervention proposed for Sahet Alqaryoun. This paper will attempt to explore the structure of such a shared place, how it is related to the social meaning and also its cultural connotation as a place of collective use that is perceived through representation and images produced by its residents. It will also study the physical evolution and different factors that shaped ‘Sahet Alqaryoun’ and demonstrate the sustainability of this historic place through time, re-identifying it and re-establishing it as an essential part of the social, socio-economic and political fabric of the city. This paper argues that urban spaces do present a public history. Our responsibility as professionals in preserving our historic spaces is to try to understand all factors that have played a role in shaping this space and to try to recognize and respect the long social and cultural history as successive stages of the city’s evolution.

Abstract: Reflecting on nearly half a century’s research on “effective teaching”, this essay attempts to arouse a lot of suspicion, including ambiguous definition of connotation, a false antithesis and the imbalance between teachers and students. Accordingly, this study further reveals hidden thinking obstacles, such as over-reliance on technical rationality, wrong inference and the separation of the dialectical relationship between teaching and learning. As a future research direction, the ideal teaching should focus on virtue rather than efficiency, giving consideration to effectiveness and responsibility.

Abstract: The basic function of a map is the intentional conveyance of information about a territory. Sign contents relating to other domains are peripheral to the said information and are therefore collectively called peripheral meaning. One kind of peripheral meaning, i.e., ideology, is the subject matter of the present paper. At this place, “ideology” is a short term for beliefs about the socio-political component of the world. On the basis of observations gleaned from the cartographic literature, an attempt is made to place ideology into a semiotic frame. An ideological meaning component is considered a connotation which is often associated not with a single type of entries but a class of such types. Finally, the retrieval of ideologicalconnotations in map interpretation is sketched.
