Connotation Lexicon: A Dash of Sentiment Beneath the Surface Meaning

Abstract: Understanding the connotation of words plays an important role in interpreting subtle shades of sentiment beyond denotative or surface meaning of text, as seemingly objective statements often allude nuanced sentiment of the writer, and even purposefully conjure emotion from the readers’ minds. The focus of this paper is drawing nuanced, connotative sentiments from even those words that are objective on the surface, such as “intelligence”, “human”, and “cheesecake”. We propose induction algorithms encoding a diverse set of linguistic insights (semantic prosody, distributional similarity, semantic parallelism of coordination) and prior knowledge drawn from lexical resources, resulting in the first broad-coverage connotation lexicon.

Reviewing the definitions of "lurkers" and some implications for online research.

Abstract: Little research focuses on lurking in the online environment or considers lurking as a valid and important form of online behavior. This may be due to the fact that there are a number of definitions, and most of them focus on a lack of participation or contribution or see it as a problematic behavior that needs to be changed. Such definitions have given lurkers a negative connotation. They need to be considered as an important factor in online research, starting with a clearer and more positive definition of lurking. It is also necessary to understanding why users decide to lurk, what activities lurkers engage in, and whether the online environment is more valuable by turning lurkers into posters.

Studies on Evaluation Index System of Public Sports Facilities Development Level in China

Abstract: With the main goal to build the comprehensive well-off society in 2020,this paper systematically researched the evaluation index system of public sports facilities development level in ChinaUsing the the method of literature review,the objective tree analysis,expert interview,Delphi,and analytical hierarchy process(AHP),we defined that sports facilities are some grounds,parks,green space,water area,and related fixed auxiliary facilities for sports competitions,training,teaching and public leisure,fitness;based on grade-level,divided the sports facilities into national level,provincial、autonomous region and municipality level,prefecture level,county、the city district、club and city-specific regional level,as well as urban communities,rural towns and villages level;The development of sports facilities is mainly related to sports facilities' planning the layout,building,using and management;and constructed the evaluation index system of sports facilities development level in China,the index system consists of 2 first—level indices,8 second—level indices and 47 third—level indices,using the analytic hierarchy process(AHP),we establish the weight coefficient of index system and explain the connotation and the calculation method of each index in detail

Collective variables for analysing performance in team sports

Abstract: In team sports, decision making requires, on the part of each player and the coach, an as-muchas-possible rational knowledge of elements of the sport and of events that occur during game play. The internal logic of team sports is presented as a basis for appreciating different analysis approaches. Two main categories of analyses are considered: static and dynamic, the second one being sub-divided into dynamic representational pictures, statistics of game play, and numerical performance indicators. Given the collective connotation of performance analysis considered in the chapter, configurations of play are seen as a central element to be used in the observation of game play and subsequent collective decision making.

Denotation and connotation in public representation: Semantic network analysis of Hwang supporters’ internet dialogues:

Abstract: This article analyzes the internet discourses of Korean people who supported Hwang Woo Suk despite the disclosure of his scientific misconduct. During the controversial period, those who supported Hwang constructed a narrative of a fallen hero trapped by jealous rivals and an “unjust” society. The supporters’ dramatized discourses compete with expert opinions of Seoul National University’s Audit Board and prosecutors that investigated the scientific fraud. By introducing and applying an innovative method of semantic network analysis, this study explores how the supporters represent their personal concerns in daily life and latent social problems in South Korea, as well as the failure of science communication. In short, the supporters’ internet representations connote concerns in daily life that motivated their sympathy and activism for Hwang.

Research on Management Strategies of Reverse Logistics in E-Commerce Environments

Abstract: With the rapid development of e-commerce, online transactions are becoming more and more popular, which causes the flourish of logistics industry in turn. But the high rate of returning has become a great challenge to companies, thus leaving floor to considerations of the effects of reverse logistics. Starting from the connotation and characteristics of the reverse logistics in e-commerce, the article first probes into its causes, then analyzes the its current management problems in China, and finally proposes suggestive strategies for every management flaw respectively.

Introduction: Populism - A Sophisticated Concept and Diverse Political Realities

Abstract: Populism is encountered both in democracies and in authoritarian regimes, in parties and organised movements, in leaders (who may be more or less charismatic) and in political messages. The common point is the strong negative connotation surrounding this phenomenon throughout the world. As Mudde observes, populism is a widely used concept, which is often reduced to a genuine “shopping list” that combines parties, movements, and leaders of diverse or even opposite ideological backgrounds and orientations. How can we explain this conceptual ambiguity? This introduction to tthe book seeks to review the literature about a concept that is difficult to grasp and use, and by way of reflecting these difficulties, it reflects on several forms of populism worldwide.

The use of ‘cultural landscape’ in 19th century German geographical literature

Abstract: The short article makes a small selection of early German literature containing the term ‘cultural landscape’ accessible for an English-language readership with the aim of enabling a broader discussion of the term. After a brief overview of the usage of ‘cultural landscape’ in geographical research, four German authors and their publications are presented. Carl Ritter appears to have been the first to use Culturlandschaft, in 1832. He was followed by Carl Vogel in 1851, Joseph Wimmer in 1882 and 1885, and Friedrich Ratzel in 1893. Analysis of their use of ‘cultural landscape’ reveals different dimensions of the term: a developmental perspective on cultural landscapes, i.e. cultural landscapes developed from natural landscapes; an opposition of nature and culture; and an understanding of cultural landscape as agricultural or park landscape. The Need to Re-Conceptualize African Traditional Religion

Abstract: Reality is a universal philosophical problem that people try to explain its underlying principle from their subjective perception. Religion is one of those ways to explain this unknown principle with spiritual connotation. In this connection, Africa as an entity looks at reality in a different perspective, which in this work we term African Religion. But as this work observes, a misconception about African Religion gave birth to a contraption called „African Traditional Religion‟. On this note, this work sets forth to re-conceptualize a misinformed religious view about the African people. It is the belief of this work that African Religion is more appropriate and should be separated from different African cultural practices that have no continental acceptance even among the African people.

The Etymology, Evolution and Social Acceptability of 'Nigger', 'Negro', and 'Nigga'

Abstract: Current understanding of the epithets (slurs) 'nigger', 'negro', and 'nigga' associated with social acceptability is based primarily from subjective sources. Usage of such terms has shifted from a cultural phenomenon to a social phenomenon. This exploratory analysis presented an evolutionary and comparative analysis of the original usage, classical, slavery (antebellum), and civil rights era perspectives of the racial epithets as well as the first term’s usage by African Americans and perspectives concerning probable future uses and meanings of the word. A quantitative survey was employed to gain a clearer understanding of associated perceptions regarding the usage of the racial epithets cultural and social suitability. Studies suggest users of these terms perceive a transformation from an opprobrious connotation into a positive reclamation of a cultural identity occurs. The objective of this study was to assess the beliefs, and acceptability regarding the origins to the usage of the term in America from a contemporary perspective. A comparative analysis explored the historical, sociological, political, literary, psychological and societal factors that influence how the words have been used and how they have evolved. The results of this study suggest a false perception of the terms racial epithets as socially acceptable. Additionally, the findings of the study raise awareness of cultural implications and provide insight for social context from historical and contemporary views. These findings highlight the need for further research to determine the extent of the social acceptance in the United States.

Abstract: The experiential economy has entered our life affecting many products with cultural connotations and changing people’s lifestyles It also displays cultural and creative industries that would be outstanding in the world Chinese culture is the basis for the superior cultural and creative industries in Taiwan Do the products evoke the sensation and emotion of consumers which designed in culture of value-added? Does the factor correlation between culture style and cultural-products? Are the business models of cultural and creative Industries and cultural-products of Qualia closely related? All of these questions are worthy of further exploration Based on information analysis and literature review this study presented a framework applicable to any kind of Qualia products and culture and creative industries The findings are as followed: (1) Cultural style is really enough to affect the design of cultural-products; (2) Successful products should conform to the five factors of Qualia: Attractiveness, Beauty, Creativity, Delicacy and Engineering; successful culture and creative industries should conform to the aesthetic economy business model Taiwan has the advantage that value-added from Qualia to business model of cultural and creative industry is a presentation of the cultural connotation Flourishing cultural and creative industries need a start in Taiwan Marketing and brand building need to be extended by aesthetic from the economy business model to be outstanding in the global marketing in the future This study includes the relation between cultural-products and consumers, Qualia products and business model exchange platform, international marketing operations and national support and counseling policies for a follow-up study issue

A Review of Frontier Research on Workplace Ostracism and Future Prospects

Abstract: Workplace ostracism refers to the act of being excluded,rejected and ignored by others in the workplace perceived by employees.Based on a review of the literature,this paper analyzes the connotation of workplace ostracism and introduces corresponding measurement instruments.Then it studies the influencing factors in aspects of the excluded and environments of exclusion occurrence,and the effects of workplace ostracism including the psychological and behavioral consequences of employees,and discusses the moderators and mediators of workplace ostracism.Finally,it points out the shortcomings of previous research and the directions in future research in order to provide references for follow-up research.

The Connotation and Goal of Science Popularisation in Modern China

Abstract: The conceptual framework and practice of science popularisation in modern China are developing constantly. At present, science popularisation is usually considered to denote activities that disseminate science knowledge to the public, popularize scientific thoughts, carry forward scientific spirits, advocate scientific methods, constantly improve public-scientific literacy and communicate with the public for their all-roundevelopment in a way easy for them to understand, accept and get involved into the activity. Scientific methods, scientific thoughts, scientific spirits and relationships between science and society constitute the main ingredients of science popularisation. The main objective of science popularisation is to improve public-scientific literacy, promote communication between science and society as well as spread scientific culture.

Progress and Prospect of Livable City Researches in China

Abstract: Livable city research involves multiple disciplines such as urban geography, city planning, architectural design. Research background of livable city in China was elaborated from three aspects: accelerating urbanization, increasing city problems, the construction of livable city becoming a requirement of the times. Then the researches of livable city were overviewed from four aspects: concept and connotation, evaluation standard, evaluation method, organization and classification of the correlative references. Magic of Language

Abstract: Language, through the discrete nature of linguistic names and strictly determined grammatical rules, creates absolute, “quantized”, sharply separated “facts” within the external world that is continuous, “fuzzy” and relational in its essence. Therefore, it is similar, in some important sense, to magic, which attributes causal and creative power to magical words and formulas. On the one hand, language increases greatly the effectiveness of the processes of thinking and interpersonal communication, yet, on the other hand, it determines and distorts to a large extent the picture of the world created within the mind. The relatively smallest (but still significant) magical admixture is present in science, because of its relatively reliable methodology, while the largest is found in religion and a large part of philosophy. The magical nature of language also manifests itself in logic and mathematics that refer to ill determined, fuzzy objects, sets and relations in the real world. The meaning of linguistic names is based on the conceptual network—an epiphenomenon (continuous in its essence) of the neural network—where interactions between particular concepts are based on the relation of connotation. The names and formulas of language correspond to these concepts which are best separated and determined. A direct relation of denotation between the elements of language and “facts” of the world is an illusion. While we cannot dispense with language because of its immense usefulness, we must remember about its “fact-creating” nature and influence on our thought and cognitive processes. The picture of the reality created as the result of them is to a large extent formed and deformed by the nature of language, and not by the “immanent” properties of the world in itself.

A Review of Knowledge Inertia:How can we explain the hindrance on individual innovation

Abstract: Knowledge, as power and a resource, has been much more important for both organizations and individuals. Therefore, one of the necessary issues for enterprises is to manage knowledge properly and efficiently. However, individuals may have their natural inertia when facing problems in the utilization of knowledge, which is termed “knowledge inertia”. This study attempts to combine the existing researches systematically from three aspects: first, the connotation of knowledge inertia; second, constructs and measurements of knowledge inertia; and third, relative researches in the era of knowledge inertia. Abstract: We,the human beings,have always been loyal to the pursuit of fairness in spite of the variation of its meaning from time to time,from context to context.In the context of ethics,the notion of fairness is exchangeable with the Abstract concept of justice,whereas in the circumstance of civil law,the principle of fairness has concrete connotation.Specifically,it means reasonable balances among various individual interests in civil society.In the province of individual transactions,the principle of fairness emphasizes the correction of interest imbalances that severely go against certain individuals' expectations of transactions.In relationship,the principle of fairness is grounded on the principle of equality that means treating the like alike,and constitutes a necessary supplementary to the principle of autonomy in the context of individual transactions.

Quality Evaluation Model and Method of Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education in Research-oriented Universities

Abstract: This paper describes the connotation and characteristics of research-oriented university and its innovation and entrepreneurship education.Based on the level,characteristics,objectives,content,and structure of innovation and entrepreneurship education in research-oriented universities,this paper analyzes the influencing factors of comprehensive evaluation index design which are mainly involved in government level,college level,students level and social level.This paper constructs the quality evaluation index system and analyzes the quality of innovation and entrepreneurship education in research-oriented universities with the help of improved BP neural network model.Finally,this paper makes a comparatively good evaluation results from the tow aspects of social reliability and validity.
