TL;DR: Zhang et al. as discussed by the authors proposed a symbolization method of traditional landscape gene of traditional settlements (SM-CLGTS) based on the concept of Symbolization Method of CLGTS, and developed a prototype system of the Traditional Landscape Genetic Symbol Database (TLGSD) to create and centrally manage traditional landscape symbols.
Abstract: China has a deep traditional culture and a long history, and is rich in traditional settlements (designated as “Famous Historic-Cultural Villages/Towns”, “Chinese Traditional Villages” by Chinese Government). To help people develop these traditional settlements to achieve the great goal of Chinese National Rejuvenation, Chinese scholar put forward the Cultural Landscape Genes of Traditional Settlements (CLGTS) in 2003. Since then, CLGTS theory has been employed to solve the issues of Chinese traditional settlements, such as the identification and regionalization of cultural landscape genes in traditional settlements, and the understanding of architectural features. Although CLGTS theory has made great strides in many application fields, there is still a lack of scientific findings in exploring the symbol mechanism from a perspective of semiotics. To explore this, we firstly examined the core features of CLGTS through a dialectical perspective. We analyzed two features of CLGTS in depth. First, CLGTS is the dialectical combination of macro settlement image and micro cultural factors of traditional settlements, material appearance and inherent traditional cultural implications, overall features and local self-renewal mechanisms, qualitative and quantitative methods, superiority of cultural factors and rich cultural connotation. Second, CLGTS is famous for its nonlinearity, self-organization, and self-iteration due to various spatial shapes and complex structures. Based on the above, we first proposed the concept of Symbolization Method of CLGTS (SM-CLGTS). Then, we further explored the key features, classification methods, and corresponding representation methods of CLGTS symbols. Finally, by using Visual C#.net program language, we developed a prototype system of the Traditional Landscape Genetic Symbol Database (TLGSD) to create and centrally manage CLGTS symbols. Test results show that TLGSD can meet the needs of constructing a CLGTS symbol database for a given region. This study is of great significance to explore and contribute to visualizing the CLGTS symbols.

TL;DR: Wang et al. as discussed by the authors proposed a scheme and heritage conservation virtual reality content construction and provided the process of building a virtual reality platform for the intangible cultural heritage of ship-shaped houses, which as an example can be used as a reference for other areas.
Abstract: Hainan is located at the southernmost tip of China, since ancient times it has always occupied an important position on the Silk Road. Hainan culture is dominated by minority and marine cultures and has a rich intangible cultural heritage. Hainan has always been committed to the development and utilization of its wide cultural heritage, and the development direction is mainly based on live display and folk activities. In May 2020, the Chinese government announced the establishment of the Hainan Free Trade Port Policy and System, the establishment of a Hainan International Free Trade Zone, and the development of tourism, modern services, and high-tech industry. All these put forward higher requirements for the protection of Hainan’s cultural heritage, not just traditional ways to protect and promote, but also to use the dividends of current scientific and technological development to keep up with the times to protect and promote. The integration of digital technology will be the development direction of cultural heritage and intangible cultural heritage. This paper enumerates and analyzes other cases and academic directions of intangible cultural heritage, combined with the present situation of intangible cultural heritage in Hainan. It also analyzes the predicament of handiwork inheritance in Hainan intangible cultural heritage, expounds the structure, humanistic connotation, and construction skills of Li nationality ship house, and summarizes the role of a novel deep learning convolutional neural network- (CNN-) based virtual reality framework of intangible cultural heritage conservation in promoting the intangible cultural heritage of traditional skills. It also puts forward the scheme and heritage conservation virtual reality content construction and provides the process of building a virtual reality platform for the intangible cultural heritage of ship-shaped houses, which as an example can be used as a reference for intangible cultural heritage researchers in other areas. At the same time, it fills the gap for the artificial intelligence-based digitization of the intangible cultural heritage.

TL;DR: In this article, the role of media and journalists in propagating cultural heritage news through social media platforms, and the narratives they tend to create in the digital public sphere, is assessed.
Abstract: In the era of big data, within the intense environment of social media, the effective communication of cultural heritage initiatives is considered of equal or—in some cases—even greater importance than heritage data themselves. Media and journalists play a critical and in some cases conflicting role in audience engagement and the sustainable promotion of cultural heritage narratives within the social media environment. The aim of this study was to assess the role of media and journalists in propagating cultural heritage news through social media platforms, and the narratives they tend to create in the digital public sphere. A qualitative approach is employed as a means of examining in-depth specific narratives, their meaning(s) and connotation(s), using semantic analysis.

TL;DR: A lexical resource for “connotations” is used to create a parallel corpus and a method for argument reframing that combines controllable text generation (positive connotation) with a post-decoding entailment component (same denotation) is proposed.
Abstract: Framing involves the positive or negative presentation of an argument or issue depending on the audience and goal of the speaker. Differences in lexical framing, the focus of our work, can have large effects on peoples’ opinions and beliefs. To make progress towards reframing arguments for positive effects, we create a dataset and method for this task. We use a lexical resource for “connotations” to create a parallel corpus and propose a method for argument reframing that combines controllable text generation (positive connotation) with a post-decoding entailment component (same denotation). Our results show that our method is effective compared to strong baselines along the dimensions of fluency, meaning, and trustworthiness/reduction of fear.

TL;DR: The OPOP model allows participants to realize that creativity and interpretation are equally important and to gradually learn to use academic papers to transform personal "tips" and "experience" into knowledge that can be imparted as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: The purpose of this research is to: (1) clarify the scope and connotation of the OPOP (One Product/Project/Performance, One Paper) model comprehensively; (2) show its application in design and creative teaching; (3) introduce this model to more people. First, the author reviews the design doctoral education system and its shortcomings and analyzes the similarities and differences between “Ph.D. of Design” and “Master of Design”; second, the researcher discusses the DIKW (Data, Information, Knowledge, Wisdom) pyramid, cognition and communication theory separately. The author also interviewed the two teachers who created the OPOP model to clarify its core meaning and goals. Finally, the author invited students who participated in an OPOP forum to fill out a questionnaire in order to analyze and understand their responses and suggestions. The OPOP model allows participants to realize that “creativity” and “interpretation” are equally important and to gradually learn to use academic papers to transform personal “tips” and “experience” into “knowledge” that can be imparted. The author hopes that the OPOP model and the general frameworks mentioned in this study can inspire all readers, enabling them to continuously explore the connotation and further possibilities of OPOP in light of the actual situation.

TL;DR: The authors investigates the emotive meaning of words commonly referred to as loaded or emotive, which include slurs, derogative or pejorative words, and ethical terms, and proposes a defeasible and automatic or automatized evaluative and intended inference.
Abstract: This paper investigates the emotive (or expressive) meaning of words commonly referred to as “loaded” or “emotive,” which include slurs, derogative or pejorative words, and ethical terms. We claim that emotive meaning can be analyzed from a argumentative perspective at distinct levels, which can forexplain some essential aspects of ethical terms, including the possibility of modifying and cancelling their “expressive force.” Emotive meaning is explained as a defeasible and automatic or automatized evaluative and intended inference commonly associated with the use of specific terms, which can be represented and assessed considering its logical structure and its defeasibility conditions. This automatic inference is conceived as part of the connotation of an ethical term, and is not necessarily stable. By means of quasi-definitions, it is possible to modify the emotive meaning while maintaining the descriptive one, automaticizing the inferences drawn from an ethical word. Through examples drawn from the recent US presidential campaign, we show how re-contextualization and emotive contexts can affect emotive meaning.

Abstract: This article will explore the possible reimagining of the infertile female body through the lens of theology. The rise of feminist movements and socio-political influence has impacted both men and women’s identity. Motherhood is still interconnected with the female identity, and this becomes problematic when women experience reproductive loss. Reproductive loss can challenge one’s faith and hope. Socially, when it comes to infertility there is still a negative connotation attached to it. This study serves to break the silence on this topic and explore ways to change the narrative surrounding infertility.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the reasons for the input-output contradiction of S&T in China, based on the resource-based view (RBV), and showed that the combination of different inputs has complex heterogeneous relationship.
Abstract: In order to clarify the reasons for the input-output contradiction of S&T in China, based on the resource-based view (RBV), we subdivide the input-output data of key universities in China and carry out empirical research. The results showed that (1) the combination of different input-output indicators has complex heterogeneous relationship. If the differences among indicators are not taken into account, contradictory conclusions may be drawn. (2) Government investment has a greater positive impact on the innovation performance of universities than enterprise investment. (3) Basic research intensity only mediates fund investment and innovation performance, while there is no mediating role between human input and innovation performance. Theoretically, our research further extend the boundary of subjects and the connotation of resources heterogeneity in RBV. Practically, we suggest that universities should constantly improve the performance evaluation system, take full account of the difference between different types of input-output. Meanwhile, the government should strengthen the system construction and mechanism design, guide more talents to participate in basic research, especially increase the funding support for basic research.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a framework for event semantic retrieval of cultural tourism, which includes data acquisition and preprocessing, data organization and processing, and data visualization components, and validate the feasibility and effectiveness of the framework.
Abstract: We present a framework for the event semantic retrieval of cultural tourism. Nowadays, information and communication technologies are ubiquitous and pervasive and have greatly promoted the development of cultural tourism. Cultural tourism should utilize these technologies to improve a sense of participation and experience for cultural tourists by sorting out domain-specific cultural knowledge from tourism attractions systematically, building bridges between tourism resources and cultural connotation naturally and presenting the cultural changes behind tourism resources vividly. To the end, we present a complete framework that is suitable to event retrieval of cultural tourism, helping cultural tourists learn culture in all directions and in depth quickly and easily before their cultural tours, and local government create tourism cards through the dissemination of culture connotation as well. Our main inspiration is that story-telling would be an effective form of acceptance by cultural tourists to spread the culture behind tourism resources. Concretely, our framework includes data acquisition and preprocessing, data organization and processing, and data visualization components. The data acquisition and preprocessing component is responsible for collecting historical event texts and fusing text knowledge. The data organization and processing component enables an intuitive view on properties and relations of the event elements in terms of defined event ontology for cultural tourism and supports event semantic retrieval. The data visualization component provides a knowledge navigation through dynamic display and an interactive interface with modification function. We have conducted event semantic retrieval of Minnan culture and verified the feasibility and effectiveness of the framework.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose to semantically model the connotation of social relationships with interactive language between individuals and connect the features and topics of the interactive language with the connotations of the social relationship.
Abstract: The profile of online social relationship is fundamental in online collaboration studies. A comprehensive profile should describe the nature of a relationship on two levels: properties and connotation. Current studies mainly characterize the connotation of a social relationship with positive/negative signs or fixed categories which are not sufficient to reveal the specific connotation of a certain relationship. Interactive language is believed to be closely related to the nature of social relationships according to sociolinguistics. In this work, we propose to semantically model the connotation of social relationships with interactive language between individuals. We connect the features and topics of the interactive language with the connotation of the social relationship. The experimental results on English emails and Chinese microblogs reveal that the new method can profile the social relationships with more meaningful details.
