01 Jan 2014TL;DR: There is a great deal of confusion concerning teaching at the university level- Labeling it "teaching" and those who do it "Teachers" is part of the problem as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: There is a great deal of confusion concerning teaching at the university level- Labeling it “teaching” and those who do it “teachers” is part of the problem. To teach implies a transfer of information, and that is not the main purpose of higher education. In fact, those who teach in universities are called “professors,” because their primary function is to profess an intellectual discipline. The most relevant meaning of the act of professing is the Middle English connotation of being bound by a vow or the even older Latin one that refers to one’s faith in, or expressing allegiance to, some idea of goal.

TL;DR: The authors defend Freire's position against one well-developed critique (by James Paul Gee), and consider some of the implications of the Freirean view for moral educators, arguing that a distinction needs to be drawn between transmitting a political or moral view and doing this in a dogmatic way.
Abstract: This article addresses some of the philosophical issues arising from debates over "political correctness" and "great books" in the early 1990s. Partly as a result of these battles, the notion of "correctness" now carries a highly pejorative connotation. The author suggests that a distinction needs to be drawn between (a) transmitting a political or moral view and (b) doing this in a dogmatic way. For one well-known educational figure, Paulo Freire, a "correct" approach to moral matters is a "critical" one. Freire believes certain moral values-those associated with the promotion of questioning, dialogue and reflective human activity, for example-ought to be promoted in all educational settings. His approach in conveying this ideal is, however, profoundly anti-dogmatic. This article defends Freire's position against one well-developed critique (by James Paul Gee), and considers some of the implications of the Freirean view for moral educators.

05 Oct 2015TL;DR: Results of an exploratory user study suggest that the restricted space of the coffin along with its unsettling cultural connotation led to an engaging, thought provoking experience in a game in which one player is invited to lie down in a coffin.
Abstract: Uncomfortable interactions are a common aspect of daily life, and have been explored in Human-Computer Interaction; yet little is known about uncomfortable gaming experiences. In this paper, we report on the design and preliminary evaluation of a game in which one player is invited to lie down in a coffin. Results of an exploratory user study suggest that the restricted space of the coffin along with its unsettling cultural connotation led to an engaging, thought provoking experience. By combining the previously separately explored dimensions of physical and psychological discomfort, we hope to better understand the effects that such challenges can have on player experience.

TL;DR: In both its Victorian and contemporary contexts, cosmopolitanism ranges in connotation from the pejorative to the progressive and in denotation from a phenomenon to an ideal as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: Though it has become conventional to refer to the “new cosmopolitanisms” when discussing the resurgence of the term in the 1990s, current debates about cosmopolitanism can be traced back to its usages in the nineteenth century. In both its Victorian and contemporary contexts, cosmopolitanism ranges in connotation from the pejorative to the progressive and in denotation from a phenomenon to an ideal. This constitutive ambivalence helps to explain the controversy that has attended the term, both then and now.
