Abstract: In this paper, the author investigated how feelings, emotions as well as ideological beliefs of individuals or groups were conveyed through linguistic expressions to manipulate those of others. He adopted a Critical Discourse Analysis approach to describe and analyse the patterns of language use in three of the last presidential campaign speeches in Nigeria with the aim of uncovering the hidden meaning relating to the social structures, identities and power relations between the electorates, political office holders. Concepts like topicalisation, mood system, passivisation, presupposition, connotation, tone and style, among others, were considered. Through the application of Critical Discourse Analysis, the findings revealed how language was used to champion individual interests in political discourse. The author explicated how the aspirants, through the manipulation of linguistic facilities, reconstructed and controlled people’s thoughts and perceptions and concluded by awakening the consciousness of every reader of political discourse to read between the lines because utterances in the political campaign arena are not

To conclude, may I say that, whatever criticism I have made of previous efforts in high school journalism has behind it only a spirit of helpfulness. The progress of the work has been amazing. The quality attained in high school newspapers in so short a time excels the aeeompJishment of the colleges. The whole field contains unusual opportunities in several different directions. The first steps have been no more wavering than might be expected. It is time, now, I think, to take stock of what has been done. The next step is standardization that will bring the educational respect that the work deserves.

Abstract: The Palang Pintu tradition is a tradition that is part of the Betawi wedding ceremony. In this study, the semiotic analysis of Roland Barthes was used. This study uses extra-qualitative research methods with an interpretive approach as a complement. This linguistic research is classified as interpretive research because it relies on interpreting texts that can be related to the context in it, such as ideological, moral, cultural, and spiritual values. In this study, the researcher aimed to analyze the meaning of the Palang Pintu procession in terms of semiotics. From the results of the study, it can be concluded that in Palang Pintu, there are 1) meanings of denotation in the procession of the Palang Pintu, processions are starting from the dustur prayer, greetings, rhyme contests, fighting, and reciting the holy verses of the Koran or chanting sike. In the denotative meaning of this Palang Pintu process, apart from explaining the literal meaning and describing the process. It also describes the stages of testing for the groom to marry his bride; 2) the connotation meaning in the Palang Pintu procession describes the practice of the teachings and laws of Islam and love for the Prophet Muhammad SAW and family ties; and 3) the myth in the Palang Pintu procession is that there are Betawi solid community principles, namely recitation, prayer, and silat. In addition, the dominance of solid Islamic teachings is evidenced by the existence of relevant verses of the Koran and hadith and the content of Betawi cultures, such as rhyming, where rhymes are used to advise on traditional art ceremonies.

Abstract: Desirability is an important factor in assigning and evaluating names. The Name Connotation Profile (NCP) characterizes name desirability by six factors that are implied by names: Success, Morality, Popularity, Warmth, Cheerfulness, and Masculine-Feminine. Representative findings obtained with the Name Connotation Profile differentiate the connotations between, e.g., nicknames versus given names, conventionally versus unconventionally-spelled names, long versus short names, and men's versus women's names. A number of applications of the Name Connotation Profile are noted.
