TL;DR: The authors reviewed the use of the term social cohesion and investigated what is meant when either the presence or absence of social cohesion is defined as a social problem and concluded that a relational model of social relationships can be a more fruitful way to address community than the approaches currently predominant in the Dutch academic debate.
Abstract: The attention devoted to social cohesion as a central theme in the Dutch social sciences is an example of how Dutch sociologists are influenced by and constantly influence the public debate. Although the term social cohesion has become increasingly popular, its usefulness as a conceptual tool is rarely a topic of discussion. Apparently, social cohesion sounds less normative than community. Perhaps its popularity can be explained by its neutral connotation rather than its analytical power. This paper critically reviews the use of the term and investigates what is meant when either the presence or absence of social cohesion is defined as a social problem. There is a strong conceptual conflation between saying cohesion and meaning community. A relational model of social relationships can be a more fruitful way to address community than the approaches currently predominant in the Dutch academic debate.

TL;DR: Wang et al. as discussed by the authors expounded the origin and connotation of "inclusive growth" and the cause and characteristics of poverty in the western minority areas, and then put forward the personal opinion on the way of promoting the inclusive poverty alleviation in the minority regions of the west.

Since the founding of new China, through more than 60 years efforts, production and living conditions of people of all ethnic groups in the west of China have been improved significantly. But for various reasons, compared with the whole country or the east, the economic and social development of the minority regions in the west is very backward. The problem of poverty in minority areas is still outstanding, and it is difficult to get out of poverty. This paper expounds the origin and connotation of “inclusive growth”, and the cause and characteristics of poverty in the western minority areas, and then put forward the personal opinion on the way of promoting the inclusive poverty alleviation in the minority regions of the west.

TL;DR: This article argued that the human propensity to create meaning lies largely in this representational ambiguity, which underlies all forms of symbolism, and argued that any attempt to emulate human ways of thinking, for example in Artificial Intelligence research, should take this paradoxical factor into account.
Abstract: The creation of meaning to interpret and communicate perceived phenomena is a fundamental trait of human intelligence. This article explains some major ways in which this is achieved, focusing on language and the perception of embodiment. It examines the representational aspects of natural language, which account for the ambiguity of linguistic signs, and describes how these manifest in metaphor, connotation and emotive expression. The article argues that the human propensity to create meaning lies largely in this representational ambiguity, which underlies all forms of symbolism. However, the ambiguity of natural language has a paradoxical side, since it is also at fault in many shortcomings of human communication, such as misunderstanding and prejudicial stereotyping. This article argues that any attempt to emulate human ways of thinking, for example in Artificial Intelligence research, should take this paradoxical factor into account.

TL;DR: In this paper, a sign system in promotional campaigns for the 2 sport/energy-drink brands PowerAde and Monster Energy is investigated, and the authors identify the meaning of sport in different contexts and settings and to interpret ideological connotation embedded in the commercial discourse on sport.
Abstract: This article investigates a sign system in promotional campaigns for the 2 sport/energy-drink brands PowerAde and Monster Energy. More specifically, the paper examines advertising materials published on the British Web sites of the 2 drink brands. The media texts are analyzed using semiotics and critical discourse analysis. In so doing, the author attempts to identify the meaning of sport in different contexts and settings and to interpret ideological connotation embedded in the commercial discourse on sport. The PowerAde advertising presents the meaning of sport as controlled and calculated physical activities associated with high-performance sport. This articulation suggests an idealization of productive individuals, and this appears to be the reification of capitalist ideology through sport. Monster Energy advertising tends to endorse alternative sporting subculture emphasizing the aspects of fun and spectacle, but such endorsement is only validated within the boundaries of consumer culture.
