Abstract: One of the main challenges in artificial intelligence or computational linguistics is understanding the meaning of a word or concept. We argue that the connotation of the term “understanding,” or the meaning of the word “meaning,” is merely a word mapping game due to unavoidable circular definitions. These circular definitions arise when an individual defines a concept, the concepts in its definition, and so on, eventually forming a personalized network of concepts, which we call an iWordNet. Such an iWordNet serves as an external representation of an individual’s knowledge and state of mind at the time of the network construction. As a result, “understanding” and knowledge can be regarded as a calculable statistical property of iWordNet topology. We will discuss the construction and analysis of the iWordNet, as well as the proposed “Path of Understanding” in an iWordNet that characterizes an individual’s understanding of a complex concept such as a written passage. In our pilot study of 20 subjects we used a regression model to demonstrate that the topological properties of an individual’s iWordNet are related to his IQ score, a relationship that suggests iWordNets as a potential new methodology to studying cognitive science and artificial intelligence.

Abstract: The influence of artificial intelligence technology on teaching design is explored to improve teaching efficiency. First, artificial intelligence is introduced and its impacts on teaching design are analyzed. Second, the connotation of the paradigm of teaching design and the paradigm shift for teaching design are explored using the paradigm shift analysis framework. Finally, the changes in teaching design under artificial intelligence are analyzed, and the impacts of artificial intelligence on teaching activities are investigated. The results show that the application of artificial intelligence technology has led to different levels of change in the six elements of teaching design, including teaching objectives, service objects (teachers and students), teaching content, teaching media, teaching environment, and teaching evaluation. The connotation and paradigm shift of the teaching design are introduced from the four elements based on the artificial intelligence technology. It is found that artificial intelligence technology can enhance the learning ability and cognitive ability of students to a certain extent while improving the teaching efficiency and learning efficiency. The investigation proves that the teaching design based on artificial intelligence technology can be applied to teaching activities, thereby improving the learning efficiency of students and the teaching efficiency of teachers.

Abstract: Purpose Grey modeling technique is an important element of grey system theory, and academic articles applied to agricultural science research have been published since 1985, proving the broad applicability and effectiveness of the technique from different aspects and providing a new means to solve agricultural science problems. The analysis of the connotation and trend of the application of grey modeling technique in agricultural science research contributes to the enrichment of grey technique and the development of agricultural science in multiple dimensions. Design/methodology/approach Based on the relevant literature selected from China National Knowledge Infrastructure, the Web of Science, SpiScholar and other databases in the past 37 years (1985–2021), this paper firstly applied the bibliometric method to quantitatively visualize and systematically analyze the trend of publication, productive author, productive institution, and highly cited literature. Then, the literature is combed by the application of different grey modeling techniques in agricultural science research, and the literature research progress is systematically analyzed. Findings The results show that grey model technology has broad prospects in the field of agricultural science research. Agricultural universities and research institutes are the main research forces in the application of grey model technology in agricultural science research, and have certain inheritance. The application of grey model technology in agricultural science research has wide applicability and precise practicability. Originality/value By analyzing and summarizing the application trend of grey model technology in agricultural science research, the research hotspot, research frontier and valuable research directions of grey model technology in agricultural science research can be more clearly grasped.

Abstract: Searching for a name to give to the excessive, exorbitant connotation – what he calls ‘the third meaning’ – that he senses in certain Eisenstein stills, Roland Barthes comes upon the Latin word obtusus , or perhaps more accurately, it comes to him. He explains why it seems just right: Obtusus means blunted, rounded … An obtuse angle is greater than a right angle: an obtuse angle of 100° , says the dictionary; the third meaning, too, seems to me greater than the pure perpendicular, the trenchant, legal upright of the narrative … I even accept, for this obtuse meaning, the word's pejorative connotation: the obtuse meaning seems to extend beyond culture, knowledge, information … It belongs to the family of puns, jokes, useless exertions; indifferent to moral or aesthetic categories (the trivial, the futile, the artificial, the parodic), it sides with the carnival aspect of things. Obtuse therefore suits my purposes well. (‘The Third Meaning’, 44) This comes from an essay first published in 1970, in which Barthes posits two ‘obvious’ meanings, the informational or communicational meaning and the symbolic meaning, and this third meaning which is not really a meaning at all.
