Abstract: Quantity surveying education in Sri Lanka (SL) presently does not appear to be catering to the industry needs indicating that it may not be up to the expected standard. Hence, the purpose of this study is to identify the gap between the competencies of graduate quantity surveyors (QSs) and the competencies that industry in SL expects from them.,A hybrid approach was used, consisting of desk reviews, expert interviews and a questionnaire survey. A comparative analysis identifying differences between two competency levels was carried out.,Analysis reveals that competencies of graduate QSs in areas of cost planning, strategic planning, risk management, value management, life cycle cost analysis, sustainability, surveying and levelling, research and development, building surveying and business management are at levels higher than industry needs. However, majority of competencies are at levels lower than industry expectations.,This research was focused only on competencies of QSs who have successfully completed a quantity surveying degree programme accredited by Institute of QSs SL, Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, Australian Institute of QSs and Pacific Association of QSs. It excluded non-graduates’ competencies as they gain competencies only through work experience.,This study revealed the need for designing quantity surveying degree programmes to cater to industry needs to ensure that graduates from these programmes are acceptable to the industry.,This study made an original contribution to knowledge by identifying the gap that currently exists between industry needs and programme outcomes of quantity surveying degree programmes, which could be invaluable when improving quantity surveying education in SL.

Abstract: Abstract Construction surveying consist in overall surveying works performed at every stage of the construction and use of a building structure. The surveyor participates in the processes of designing, direct implementation, maintenance and use, as well as demolition of a building structure. Advanced surveying techniques, such as laser scanning and UAV photogrammetry, are being increasingly used to perform the surveyor’s tasks. The aim of this research paper was to analyze the Polish legal regulations for the possibilities of applying the above-mentioned techniques to carry out the surveying works which are subject to the obligatory submission to public administration authorities. The primary focus was placed on the type of the works associated with construction surveying. The conducted research studies confirmed the lack of appropriate guidelines that would clearly define the scope and method of using laser scanning and UAV photogrammetry in construction surveying. At the same time, it was demonstrated that both these techniques of spatial data acquisition were sufficiently accurate to perform plane and vertical land surveys pursuant to the legal acts currently in force in Poland, and they can be used at selected stages of construction surveying. Finally, the authors proposed some solutions that would make it easier for the surveyors to use laser scanning and UAV photogrammetry in standard surveying works.

Abstract: Building surveying is an important element for as-built documentation as well as for planning and construction in existing contexts In connection with BIM, however, building surveying faces new challenges In the past, the results of surveying were typically two-dimensional CAD drawings depicting floor plans, sections, and views BIM, in contrast, relies on digital three-dimensional building models based on an object-oriented modeling paradigm including semantics, descriptive data, and relationships of building elements This holistic building modeling approach also impacts the surveying workflow for building measurement as well as the data processing Nevertheless, the basis for building measurement are geodetic surveying techniques with single-point methods (manual surveying, tacheometry) or aerial measurement methods (photogrammetry, laser scanning) in combination with appropriate surveying software Also, new developments in context of spatial data capturing (UAVs, multi sensor and mobile mapping systems) rely on these basic methods

Abstract: The invention discloses a building facade surveying and mapping method. The method comprises three surveying and mapping links, including a marking link, a photographing link and a modeling link. By use of the digitalized building surveying and mapping method, firstly a digitalized three-dimensional model of a building part to be surveyed is built, and then based on the digitalized three-dimensional model, a building facade surveying and mapping graph of the building part to be surveyed. Compared with a building facade surveying and mapping graph drawn according to a building facade surveyingand mapping sketch drawn by manual operation on a mapping site in the prior art, the building facade surveying and mapping graph obtained by the method is greatly improved in accuracy.

Abstract: The paper starts from a documented premise of there being a critical shortage of skilled building surveyors. It also uses a researched premise that all stakeholders to building surveying education favour the incorporation of vocational skills training alongside academic instruction. This creates graduates already possessing of core vocational skills and a knowledge of practice. The question posed is whether practice themselves can assist in this skills transfer, or whether it should be left wholly to specialist educators to devise ways of delivering such knowledge. A fortunate opportunity which allows the author to evaluate two identical activities of dilapidations surveying undertaken by the same learners, in the same academic period, under identical conditions, with one facilitated and lead by a specialist surveying tutor as an industrial simulation and the other facilitated and lead by a current practitioner, on a current dilapidations instruction. Findings tend towards a belief that practice reaching out to assist educators is a worthwhile way that any future skills shortages can be addressed through graduates entering practice with greater experience of vocational practices and skills.

Abstract: An occupational standard for construction surveyors and the desired skills of surveyors in Thailand’sconstruction industry were articulated. The research was conducted by studying data from previous researchworldwide. The results were used as a guideline to summarize the conceptual framework of the methodology byarranging a seminar attended by 15 experts with experience in construction surveying and by performing functionalanalysis involving the key purpose, role, and function; unit of competency; and elements of competency.Subsequently, the results were evaluated, and the standard certification was verified by experts by analyzing thecongruence index. The experts agreed in full and certified the research results evaluation on the professionaldevelopment process of construction surveyors. The process of assessing and certifying the standard of surveyorsin Thailand consists of 39 units of competency and 110 elements of competency. Based on the research, the mostimportant competence of regular use in the survey with 8 elements of competency was selected as the model toevaluate, involving 15 participants from Unique Engineering & Construction PCL. The experiment was conductedon the operational unit in the project areas. To evaluate the professional qualification level along with knowledgeand skill assessment criteria, an instrument was developed. Using the developed instruments for assessment ofknowledge and skills, scores of 100% and at least 80% on two sets of assessment criteria were regarded as passing.This revealed that all selected people who were assessed met the criteria of professional qualification in theconstruction surveyors.Keywords: construction surveyors, professional qualification, skills recognition, competency
