TL;DR: This column describes a network application design course at Virginia Tech that uses smartphones as computing platforms and seeks to provide in-depth descriptions of important and innovative work in education and training in pervasive computing.
Abstract: Smartphone computing platforms are increasingly used for instruction because such devices are becoming as common as traditional desktop computers and they can excite students about computing and networking. This column describes a network application design course at Virginia Tech that uses smartphones as computing platforms. It seeks to provide in-depth descriptions of important and innovative work in education and training in pervasive computing. I welcome your suggestions and comments for future columns.

TL;DR: A middleware architecture designed to ease mobility-aware service development is presented, which hides technology-specific mechanisms and offers a set of facilities for context awareness and handoff management.
Abstract: The overwhelming success of mobile devices and wireless communications is stressing the need for the development of mobility-aware services Device mobility requires services adapting their behavior to sudden context changes and being aware of handoffs, which introduce unpredictable delays and intermittent discontinuities Heterogeneity of wireless technologies (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3G) complicates the situation, since a different treatment of context-awareness and handoffs is required for each solution This paper presents a middleware architecture designed to ease mobility-aware service development The architecture hides technology-specific mechanisms and offers a set of facilities for context awareness and handoff management The architecture prototype works with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, which today represent two of the most widespread wireless technologies In addition, the paper discusses motivations and design details in the challenging context of mobile multimedia streaming applications

TL;DR: The design and implementation of a system that exploits context-awareness and couples it with policy-based management in order to enable the self-management of MANETs is presented, to support self-configuration by being adaptive to varying conditions modeled as context.
Abstract: Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) are characterized by a degree of dynamicity that can result in significant drawbacks regarding their useful deployment. The fact they are formed spontaneously, comprising possibly heterogeneous devices, hinders further their wide adoption. In this paper we present the design and implementation of a system that exploits context-awareness and couples it with policy-based management in order to enable the self-management of MANETs. The key idea is to support self-configuration by being adaptive to varying conditions modeled as context, with high-level management policies driving self-configuration towards particular goals. We propose the management of the MANET in a hierarchical but also distributed manner through a dynamically constructed set of manager nodes. We present and evaluate our work on context-awareness and context dissemination in MANETs through simulation and also by deploying the prototype system in our experimental MANET testbed for a proof-of-concept application scenario.

TL;DR: This paper argues that the driving task exhibits the properties of complex systems and proposes a context awareness design which considers the driver, vehicle and environment as a whole, and recommends approaches for building safety critical context-aware systems.
Abstract: This paper argues that the driving task exhibits the
properties of complex systems. Driving behavior emerges from the
intricate and complex interactions between the driver, the vehicle
and the environment. An emerging driving behavior could not
necessary be linearly predicted. However a context-aware system
could assist the driver in augmenting the probability of undertaking
safe behavior. Unlike existing context aware systems which isolate
one characteristic such as road or driver workload and
concentrate on it in exclusion of the others factors, this seminal
research proposes a context awareness design which considers the
driver, vehicle and environment as a whole. We focus on the
principles that underlie the system in order to model it with the
view of understanding, predicting and improving driver behavior.
This approach places context-aware design within a wider framework
that takes into account information related to the driver,
environment and vehicle. It recommends approaches for building
safety critical context-aware systems. Such an approach aids in the
design of safe in-vehicle context-aware systems.
