Abstract: In this paper, we present an implemented system for supporting group interaction in mobile distributed computing environments. First, an introduction to context computing and a motivation for using contextual information to facilitate group interaction is given. We then present the architecture of our system, which consists of two parts: a subsystem for location sensing that acquires information about the location of users as well as spatial proximities between them, and one for the actual context-aware application, which provides services for group interaction.

Abstract: The development of pervasive computing has put the light on a challenging problem: how to dynamically compose services in heterogeneous and highly changing environments? We propose a survey that defines the service composition as a sequence of four steps: the translation, the generation, the evaluation, and finally the execution. With this powerful and simple model we describe the major service composition middleware. Then, a classification of these service composition middleware according to pervasive requirements - interoperability, discoverability, adaptability, context awareness, QoS management, security, spontaneous management, and autonomous management - is given. The classification highlights what has been done and what remains to do to develop the service composition in pervasive environments.

One solution is to create a reasoning module that accepts requests to display information from multiple applications and controls how the information is presented to minimize visual disruptions to users. Such a system might use information about what activity is occurring in the space to exploit a powerful phenomenon of the human visual system: change blindness.

Abstract: Mobile computing environments are characterized by heterogeneity - systems consisting of different device types, operating systems, network interfaces, and communication protocols. Such heterogeneity calls for middleware that can adapt to different execution contexts, hide heterogeneity from applications, and transparently and dynamically switch between network and sensor technologies. Additionally, middleware for context-aware systems must keep a context model (a model of their environment), taking into account several aspects of the environment. The more complex and heterogeneous an execution environment is, the more complicated its underlying context model. Moreover, because systems can evolve, context management must also support model evolution without restarting, reconfiguring, or redeploying applications and services. We describe a context management middleware that can efficiently handle context despite the execution environment's heterogeneity and evolution. It uses context meta-information to improve a context-aware system's overall performance

Abstract: Context-aware applications are increasingly complex and autonomous, and research has indicated that explanations can help users better understand and ultimately trust their autonomous behavior. However, it is still unclear how to effectively present and provide these explanations. This work builds on previous work to make context-aware applications intelligible by supporting a suite of explanations using eight question types (e.g., Why, Why Not, What If). We present a formative study on design and usability issues for making an intelligible real-world, mobile context-aware application, focusing on the use of intelligibility for the mobile contexts of availability, place, motion, and sound activity. We discuss design strategies that we considered, findings of explanation use, and design recommendations to make intelligibility more usable.
