TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose the use of Activity Theory to first model context and further populate the model for assessing situations in a pervasive computing environment, through the socio-technical perspective given by Activity Theory, the knowledge intensive context model, utilised in ambient intelligent system, is designed.
Abstract: One of the cornerstones of any intelligent entity is the ability to understand how occurrences in the surrounding world influence its own behaviour. Different states, or situations, in its environment should be taken into account when reasoning or acting. When dealing with different situations, context is the key element used to infer possible actions and information needs. The activities of the perceiving agent and other entities are arguably one of the most important features of a situation; this is equally true whether the agent is artificial or not. This work proposes the use of Activity Theory to first model context and further on populate the model for assessing situations in a pervasive computing environment. Through the socio-technical perspective given by Activity Theory, the knowledge intensive context model, utilised in our ambient intelligent system, is designed.

TL;DR: An overview of mobile cloud computing technology is provided, focusing on its context-awareness aspects and challenges, to overcome the ever-increasing computational and energy demands of smartphone applications.
Abstract: Cloud computing is gaining popularity due to virtually unlimited resources, low capital cost, ease of adoption, flexible resource provisioning, and high scalability. Considering these benefits, researchers envision the usage of cloud computing for mobile devices to overcome the ever-increasing computational and energy demands of smartphone applications. However, this requires specialized context-ware application development models that can facilitate the development of cloud-enabled applications capable of making context-aware computation offloading decisions. This article provides an overview of mobile cloud computing technology, focusing on its context-awareness aspects and challenges.

TL;DR: The issue in the broad area of security for Pervasive Computing is maintaining trust in an interactive environment and the solution presented requires an infrastructure of pervasive and context sensing technology to provide entity mapping, policy and trust management services.
Abstract: The issue we have focused on in the broad area of security for Pervasive Computing is maintaining trust in an interactive environment. Our solution is based on the premise that computers and implicit interaction mechanisms must function in accordance with the explicit parameters of physical human-human interaction. Otherwise, this results in imbalances between the physical and virtual worlds, which leads to ”windows of vulnerability”. Our solution presented requires an infrastructure of pervasive and context sensing technology, to provide entity mapping, policy and trust management services. We also investigate generating cryptographic keys using the context available The underlying technology is based on the Smart-Its context sensing, computation and communications platform.

TL;DR: This work defines a context aware recommender system aimed at suggesting pertinent points of interest (POIs) to tourists and is strongly based on the synergy between soft computing and data mining techniques.
Abstract: In the area of ambient intelligence there is a need to address user needs according with context features. Recently, the synergy between context aware computing and collaborative filtering is leading to enhance recommender systems with capabilities always nearer to user needs. Specifically, in the domain of tourism it is useful to proactively suggest right sets of attractive locations, events and so on. This work defines a context aware recommender system aimed at suggesting pertinent points of interest (POIs) to tourists. In particular, the approach is strongly based on the synergy between soft computing and data mining techniques. The general framework integrates user profiles, history of social networking and POIs data. Then by defining collaborative filtering approach on the history meaningful POIs are extracted. Indeed, soft computing techniques are mainly applied in order to support activity of unsupervised users and POIs classification. On the other hand, data mining techniques are exploited in order to extract rules able to associate user profile and context features with an eligible set of recommendable POIs. Experimental results show performance in terms of recommendations accuracy.

TL;DR: The role of the I4.0 revolution in driving the diffusion of smart products and services is discussed, by focusing on ambient intelligence and context awareness in IoT and on the so-called DIKW hierarchy.
Abstract: This article surveys the concept of Industry 4.0 (I4.0), which has become more and more pervasive in recent years thanks to the great effort that factories, researchers, and organizations are putting into its definition and development. We present the IoT as the key I4.0 technology since it enables faster and more efficient production and management processes, leveraging the flexibility of smart, ubiquitous, connected devices. In particular, we discuss the role of the I4.0 revolution in driving the diffusion of smart products and services, by focusing on ambient intelligence and context awareness in IoT and on the so-called DIKW hierarchy. Finally, to demonstrate the practical impact of this emerging framework, we show, as practical examples, three typical I4.0 applications in the smart factory, smart home, and smart health scenarios.
