Abstract: This paper analyzes the performance of digital phase modulation systems in Gaussian noise and determines required signal-to-noise ratio as a function of the number of discrete phases and the desired error rate, under conditions of no fading. Both coherent detection with a locally-derived reference carrier and phase comparison detection are considered. The calculations show that multiphase modulation provides an efficient trade of bandwidth for signal-to-noise ratio in comparison with multilevel amplitude modulation. It is also found that phase comparison detection introduces about a 3-db degradation over coherent detection except with binary modulation, for which the degradation is less than 1 db for error rates not exceeding about 0.001.

Abstract: This paper addresses polyphase code optimization with respect to the nonlinear frequency modulation waveform generated by the continuous phase modulation implementation. A greedy search leveraging the complementary metrics of peak sidelobe level, integrated sidelobe level, and spectral content yield extremely low range sidelobes relative to waveform time-bandwidth product. Transmitter distortion is also incorporated into the optimization via modeling and actual hardware. Thus the physical radar emission can be designed to address spectrum management and enable the physical realization of advanced waveform-diverse schemes.

Abstract: This paper describes and summarizes the characteristics of the modulation techniques most applicable to digital radio. The modulation techniques discussed are on-off-keying (OOK) with coherent and noncoherent detection, quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), quadrature partial response (QPR), frequency-shift-keying (FSK) with noncoherent detection, continuous phase FSK (CP-FSK) with coherent and noncoherent detection, minimum-shift-keying (MSK), binary and quaternary phase-shift-keying (BPSK, QPSK) with coherent and differentially coherent detection, offset-keyed QPSK (OK-QPSK), M -ary PSK with coherent detection ( M = 8, 16 ), and 16-ary amplitude and phase-shift-keying (APK). Functional descriptions of these schemes are provided and their performance is compared in a series of tables summarizing the results of the literature of the past 20 years. The modulation schemes are compared with respect to ideal (white Gaussian noise) performance, spectral properties, signaling speed, complexity, and the effects on performance of interference, fading and delay distortion.

Abstract: Quadrature Amplitude Modulated signals are generated from data bits by using a first Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) modulator for encoding a first pair of the data bits into one of four carrier signal phases, thereby producing a first QPSK signal. A second QPSK modulator encodes a second pair of the data bits into one of four carrier signal phases, thereby producing a second QPSK signal. The first QPSK signal is amplified to a first power level, and the second QPSK signal is amplified to a second power level. The first and second amplified signals are then combined to produce a signal in which four data bits are encoded. In another aspect of the invention, a new type of modulation, called Offset Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (OQPSK), is used in place of the first and second QPSK modulators, so that an Offset Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (OQAM) transmitter is formed. An OQPSK modulator encodes data bits by encoding a first sub-group of the data bits into a real part of a complex signal at an odd instant of a clock, and by encoding a second sub-group of the data bits into an imaginary part of the complex signal at an even instant of the clock. OQPSK modulation provides the benefit of having all signal transitions being constrained to trajectories around constant radius circles, thereby producing spectral efficiency.

Abstract: Background theory and specific coding designs for combined coding/modulation schemes utilizing convolutional codes and continuous-phase modulation (CPM) are presented. In this paper the case of r = 1/2 coding onto a 4-ary CPM is emphasized, with short-constraint length codes presented for continuous-phase FSK, double-raised-cosine, and triple-raised-cosine modulation. Coding buys several decibels of coding gain over the Gaussian channel, with an attendant increase of bandwidth. Performance comparisons in the power-bandwidth tradeoff with other approaches are made.
