TL;DR: In this article, a Nyquist filter 32 upsamples by a factor of k each of the 2M symbols in parallel during one system clock period (CP), and a plurality of multipliers 50, 52 each upconverts a filter component output with a carrier wave signal 46, 48 that is output from a numerically controlled oscillator 44.
Abstract: A circuit 30 for upsampling and upconverting a high rate signal that is divided into M in phase (I) symbols and M quadrature (Q) symbols. A Nyquist filter 32 upsamples by a factor of k each of the 2M symbols in parallel during one system clock period (CP). The filter 32 has a plurality of 2kM filter components 40, 42 , that each provides a continuous output. A plurality of multipliers 50, 52 each upconverts a filter component output with a carrier wave signal 46, 48 that is output from a numerically controlled oscillator 44 . A plurality of adders 54 each adds the output of two multipliers 50 to recombine corresponding I and Q samples to output kM samples during a CP. For continuous phase modulation, N parallel bits are input into the filter 32 , upsampled in one CP, and accumulated and modulated 82 in parallel in one CP. For analog processing, M (I) and M (Q) symbols are input into an FIR filter 77 a, 77 b for upsampling, and decimated at a MUX/DAC block 78 for subsequent analog upconversion.

TL;DR: A blind maximum-likelihood channel estimation algorithm is developed for turbo trellis-coded/continuous-phase modulation (TTC/CPM) signals propagating through additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and Rician fading environments and presents CPM for TTC signals.
Abstract: In this paper, a blind maximum-likelihood channel estimation algorithm is developed for turbo trellis-coded/continuous-phase modulation (TTC/CPM) signals propagating through additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and Rician fading environments. We present CPM for TTC signals, since it provides low spectral occupancy and is suitable for power- and bandwidth-limited channels. Here, the Baum-Welch (BW) algorithm is modified to estimate the channel parameters. We investigate the performance of TTC/CPM for 16-CPFSK over AWGN and Rician channels for different frame sizes, in the case of ideal channel state information (CSI), no CSI, and BW estimated CSI.

TL;DR: This paper investigates the pulse amplitude modulation decomposition and the spectral efficiency of duobinary continuous phase modulation and proposes a PAM decomposition characterized by the presence of a single main pulse and by uncorrelated pseudo-symbols for a half integer modulation index value for this ternary CPM.
Abstract: In this paper, we investigate the pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) decomposition and the spectral efficiency of duobinary continuous phase modulation (CPM), where duo- binary CPM represents a ternary CPM whose symbols are generated using a duobinary encoder. We show that this precoder ensures a higher spectral efficiency compared with binary CPM and we propose a PAM decomposition characterized by the presence of a single main pulse and by uncorrelated pseudo-symbols for a half integer modulation index value for this ternary CPM. We show that shaped offset quadrature phase shift keying belongs to this CPM family and we provide a new reduced complexity trellis detector capable of reaching identical performance as the one introduced by Perrins as well as new linear detectors.

TL;DR: In this article, a continuous phase shifter using circularly polarized helices in a circular waveguide is described, which has an insertion loss of less than 0.2 db. Errors less than ± 2° can be obtained over a 3% frequency band.
Abstract: A continuous phase shifter using circularly polarized helices in a circular waveguide is described. The phase shifter is smaller than previous types and has an insertion loss of less than 0.2 db. Equations for the phase-shift error and the amount of amplitude modulation produced due to reflections and elliptical polarization are derived. Errors less than ±2° can be obtained over a 3 per cent frequency band. A 9,400-mc model designed to rotate at 3,600 rpm is 5? inches long and 1 inch in diameter, excluding the motor drive.

TL;DR: In this article, a method and a transmitter system for modulating binary information on a frequency shift keying carrier in a very narrow band was provided, where phase reversal keying was initially used to create a carrier.
Abstract: A method and a transmitter system is provided for modulating binary information on a frequency shift keying carrier in a very narrow band. Phase reversal keying is initially used to create a carrier. The transmitter of the present invention generates a carrier signal by modulating a reference signal and a control signal having two frequencies representing the binary data to be transmitted. The resulting phase reversal carrier signal is processed by high order filtering such that the output of the transmitter provides a frequency shift keyed carrier at very close frequencies. The resulting carrier signal may, at the receiver, be processed by very narrow band filtering so as to create a communication system which will use only a small part of the available spectrum.
