TL;DR: The contract net protocol is specified based on the specification method proposed in this paper, and the concept of time is incorporated into the communicating finite state machine.
Abstract: In this paper, we clarify the properties of the contract net protocol based on its formal specification. To specify the contract net protocol, we propose a formal specification method for an agent system. In this method, agents are modeled as communicating finite state machines. To deal with the behavior of agents and its time passage explicitly, we incorporate the concept of time into the communicating finite state machine. The contract net protocol is specified based on the specification method proposed in this paper. From the specification, we analyze the possibility about agent deadlock and its avoidance solution. key words: multi-agent system, contract net protocol, formal

TL;DR: In this paper, an agent-based flexible scheduling is built for real-world manufacturing systems, where the allocation of manufacturing resources is achieved through negotiation among the job and machine agents in a multi-agent system (MAS).
Abstract: An efficient agent-based flexible scheduling is built for real-world manufacturing systems in this paper. Considering the alternative processes and alternative machines, the allocation of manufacturing resources is achieved through negotiation among the job and machine agents in a multi-agent system (MAS). Ant Colony Intelligence (ACI) is proposed to be combined with Contract Net Protocol (CNP) so as to make agents adaptive to the changing circumstance. In the framework of CNP, the interactive bidding process is adopted. ACI is integrated into both machine agents and job agents to solve the task allocation and sequencing problem. CNP is introduced to allow the agents to cooperate and coordinate their local schedules in order to find globally near-optimal robust schedules. The negotiation protocol is an interactive bidding mechanism based on the hybrid contract net protocol. The implementation of the issues using CNP model is discussed. Experimental results verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed algorithm integrated with ant-inspired coordination.

TL;DR: This research extends the previous system that used a combination of a Matchmaker architecture together with the Contract Net protocol to enable the dynamic, task-based creation of a Sensor Web to allow sensors to rationally decommit from future tasks and to join a newly formed Sensor Web.
Abstract: We describe how negotiation between agents is used to create coalitions of sensors that are joined into a Sensor Web. The work presented in this paper uses argumentation-based negotiation to allow sensors to rationally decommit from future tasks and to join a newly formed Sensor Web; or, alternately, to reject joining a Sensor Web if they believe their previous commitment to be more important. This research extends our previous system that used a combination of a Matchmaker architecture together with the Contract Net protocol to enable the dynamic, task-based creation of a Sensor Web. We tested our negotiation-based Sensor Web system using a simulation of a cyclonic event and a variety of sensors.

TL;DR: In this paper, a modified Contract Net Protocol (CNP) using market mechanism is proposed for Spacecraft TT&C Resources Scheduling (STRS) problem, where three agents are designed in this system: manager, task, and resource.
Abstract: Analyze the characteristics of Spacecraft TT&C Resources Scheduling (STRS) problem, build a common describing model. Design an algorithm based on modified Contract Net Protocol (CNP) using market mechanism. Three agents are designed in this system: manager, task, and resource. Each agent represents a practical participant in the scheduling process of STRS. Detailed strategy is founded for each agent and a scheduling flow is proposed. The algorithm validity is illustrated by a practical example.

TL;DR: Pheromone, which comes from the collective behavior of ant colonies for food foraging, has the capacity for task allocation model to automatically find efficient routing paths for processing orders and to reduce communication overhead, which exists in contract net protocol, in shop floor control system.
Abstract: A new optimization approach, called pheromone, which comes from the collective behavior of ant colonies for food foraging is proposed to optimize task allocation. These ants spread pheromone information and make global information available locally; thus, an ant agent only needs to observe its local environment in order to account for nonlocal concerns in its decisions. This approach has the capacity for task allocation model to automatically find efficient routing paths for processing orders and to reduce communication overhead, which exists in contract net protocol, in shop floor control system. An example confirms that a pheromone-based optimization approach has an excellent allocation performance in shop floor.
