Abstract: In a dynamic manufacturing environment, manufacturing cell configurations based on current part mix and production process may need to be revised once the part mix or the production process has changed. However, machine and equipment moving costs make frequent reconfiguration uneconomical and sometimes impossible. Designing a sustainable cellular manufacturing system in a dynamic environment is studied in this paper. An integer programming model is developed to minimize material handling and machine costs as well as cell reconfiguration cost for a planning horizon of multiple time periods. Solving this integer programming problem is NP-complete. A decomposition approach is developed so that the decomposed subproblems can be solved with less computational effort. Dynamic programming is then employed to find a solution of the original problem. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the model and the solution technique developed in this paper.

Abstract: Higher performance is gained through a new architecture which implements a new method of computational resource allocation, utilization and programming based on the concept of Worm-hole Run-Time Reconfiguration (RTR). A stream-driven Worm-hole RTR methodology extends contemporary data-flow paradigms to utilize the dynamic creation of operators and pathways, based upon stream processing in which parcels of data move through custom created pathways and interact with other parcels to achieve the desired computation. These parcels independently allocate the necessary computing resources and data paths as they navigate through the platform. The Worm-hole RTR platform consists of a large number of configurable functional units that perform the custom computations and rich, configurable interconnection pathways between the functional units. Once a computational pathway has been established (sensitized) by the head of the stream parcel, data are processed through the pathway with zero overhead. All ports entering the computing platform serve both to configure operations and pathways and to pass computational data streams. As a result, programming and configuration is not limited to a single port. Configuration through multiple independent ports allows greater concurrency, faster reconfiguration, and fewer computational dependencies, all with relatively low cost in silicon.

Abstract: This study proposes and applies an evolutionary-based approach for multiobjective reconfiguration in electrical power distribution networks. In this model, two types of indicators of power quality are minimised: (i) power system's losses and (ii) reliability indices. Four types of reliability indices are considered. A microgenetic algorithm ('GA) is used to handle the reconfiguration problem as a multiobjective optimisation problem with competing and non-commensurable objectives. In this context, experiments have been conducted on two standard test systems and a real network. Such problems characterise typical distribution systems taking into consideration several factors associated with the practical operation of medium voltage electrical power networks. The results show the ability of the proposed approach to generate well-distributed Pareto optimal solutions to the multiobjective reconfiguration problem. In the systems adopted for assessment purposes, our proposed approach was able to find the entire Pareto front. Furthermore, better performance indexes were found in comparison to the Pareto envelope-based selection algorithm 2 (PESA 2) technique, which is another well-known multiobjective evolutionary algorithm available in the specialised literature. From a practical point of view, the results established, in general, that a compact trade-off region exists between the power losses and the reliability indices. This means that the proposed approach can recommend to the decision maker a small set of possible solutions in order to select from them the most suitable radial topology.
