Abstract: The entry into force of the Nagoya Protocol of the Convention on Biological Diversity will lead to new legislation and regulations that could change international collaborative research in biology This article suggests a new approach that researchers can use in negotiating international Access and Benefit Sharing agreements under the Protocol Research on medicinal plants is used as a case study because it is a domain with many competing stakeholders involving non-commercial and commercial research, as well as national and international commercial markets We propose a decision-based framework to aid all participants as they negotiate ABS agreements for non-commercial biodiversity research Our proposed approach promotes transparency and builds trust, reflects the principles in the Convention on Biological Diversity, and respects and protects the interests of biodiversity rich developing countries This approach is an alternative to often-used adversarial approaches

Abstract: The Greek Taxon Information System is an initiative of the LifeWatchGreece Research Infrastructure (ESFRI) that is resuming efforts to compile a complete checklist of all species reported from the Greek territory Such an effort is necessary as a requirement for all signatories of the Convention on Biological Diversity (Greece is a signatory since 1994) Over an estimation published in 2004 according to which 50,000 species are present in Greece, belonging to most kingdoms except bacteria and viruses, a list of 35,000 valid species (and subspecies) has been assembled from previous national and European initiatives and specialized databases on various groups A new database will be progressively set up in the LifeWatchGreece Infrastructure within the near future Before the dissemination of this dataset, it is important that the checklists will be validated by specialists for each taxonomic group The first step already accomplished was to build and publish Preliminary Checklists for some taxonomic groups of marine fauna, which have been validated by specialists on the basis of their expertise and secondary literature The publication of these Preliminary Checklists is expected to increase the visibility and usability of the database in the future not only to the scientific community but also to the broader domain of biodiversity management, especially in cases where no such checklists have been published yet The guidelines used to test the first taxonomic groups are presented in this paper Keywords Biodiversity, global species databases, biodiversity management, data management

Abstract: This chapter focuses on explaining the definition of utilization of genetic resources, by breaking it down into its components, and linking it to the definition of derivatives. The term first appeared in the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), both in its objectives and in its provision devoted to access to genetic resources, when referring to benefit-sharing arising from the 'utilization of genetic resources'. The chapter discusses the implicit exclusion of biological resources used as commodities in trade, and the lack of definition of utilization of traditional knowledge. In the absence of an explicit definition, utilization of traditional knowledge needs to be understood by combining different elements of the Protocol. In other words, as traditional knowledge under the Protocol would serve as lead information for the utilization of genetic resources, it can be understood as hinging on the same intent (research and development) as in the case of genetic resources.Keywords: benefit-sharing; Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD); genetic resources; traditional knowledge

Abstract: Will the Convention on Biological Diversity put an end to biological control? Under the Convention on Biological Diversity countries have sovereign rights over their genetic resources. Agreements governing the access to these resources and the sharing of the benefits arising from their use need to be established between involved parties. This also applies to species collected for potential use in biological control. Recent applications of access and benefit sharing principles have already made it difficult or impossible to collect and export natural enemies for biological control research in several countries. If such an approach is widely applied it would impede this very successful and environmentally safe pest management method based on the use of biological diversity. The International Organization for Biological Control of Noxious Animals and Plants has, therefore, created the "Com- mission on Biological Control and Access and Benefit Sharing". This commission is carrying out national and international activities to make clear how a benefit sharing regime might seriously frustrate the future of biological control. In addition, the IOBC Com- mission members published information on current regulations and perceptions concerning exploration for natural enemies and drafted some 30 case studies selected to illustrate a variety of points relevant to access and benefit sharing. In this article, we summarize our concern about the effects of access and benefit sharing systems on the future of biological control.
