TL;DR: Candida albicans was found to be associated with green leaves only and was completely absent from dry, intact leaves, which indicates that it multiplies and grows on leaf leachates only and does not take part in decomposition of the leaf litter.
Abstract: Two yeasts, Candida albicans and Aureobasidium pullulans were isolated from the leaf surface of four varieties of Corchorus olitorius L. viz. JRO 524, JRO 632, JRO 7835 and JRO 878. Their distribution pattern was compared among the four microbial communities that developed out of the same source of inoculum under similar climatic conditions. Candida albicans was found to be associated with green leaves only and was completely absent from dry, intact leaves. This indicates that it multiplies and grows on leaf leachates only and does not take part in decomposition of the leaf litter. Aureobasidium pullulans , on the other hand, well adapted to the epiphytic mode of life survives throughout the period of leaf development and senescence. Its association with the older and dry intact leaves gives some clues to its potential in the degradation of leaf litter.
