Abstract: A pot culture experiment was conducted on jute (Corchorus olitorius L) grown in Lateritic soil of Panagrah during 1993 and 1994 to study the effect of K and Zn application on dry matter production and their uptake by jute crop fibre and wood Application of K and Zn increased the total dry matter, bark (fibre) and wood up to 40 mg K kg−1 and 5 mg Zn kg−1 levels respectively Total K uptake increased significantly with the application of K and Zn individually Uptake of K by both b'ark and wood was also significant due to application of K alone But the effect of Zn alone and K x Zn interaction on fibre and wood did not show any significant results However, Zn uptake by the whole plant increased significantly due to application of all levels of K and Zinc upto 5 mg kg−1 respectively With the increasing level of potassium, zinc absorption increased significantly with significant decrease in K/Zn ratio of the whoie plant

Abstract: Characterization of induced mutants is gaining importance for increasing efficiency of mutation assisted plant breeding. In this study, phenotypic and genetic diversity of a set of 60 mutants of Corchorus olitorius (tossa jute), an important fibre yielding crop species were characterized using morphological traits related to fibre and biomass productivity, anatomical traits related to fibre distribution and development in the bark tissues of jute and simple sequence repeat (SSR) polymorphism. Morpho-anatomical diversity revealed high variability in the population, identifying mutant genotypes with superior fibre recovery and fibre anatomy traits. Ten of these mutants exhibited higher fibre recovery than a popular cultivar, JRO 204. A good number of mutants exhibited superior fibre anatomy characters like fibre wedge length, fibre wedge breadth and number of fibre cells per bundle than the cultivars. Twenty three SSR markers amplified a total of 53 alleles with polymorphism information content of 0.53. Six markers, MJM 006, MJM 432, MJM 489, MJM 566, MJM 569 and MJM 618 exhibited high resolving power (= 0.5). SSR marker based cluster analysis identified more genetic groups than morphogenetic classification, but association between genetic and phenotypic classification was low. For selection of parents for mutation assisted genetic improvement in jute, judicious use of both diversity measures for selection of parents would be more useful.

An anti-inflammatory cosmetic composition comprises 0.001-10%(w/w) of the extract of Corchorus olitorius L. which is prepared by drying and cutting leaves of Corchorus olitorius L., extracting Corchorus olitorius L. leaves with ethanol, methanol, propylene glycol, 1,3-butylene glycol, ethylacetate, diethylether or dimethylsulfoxide, and filtering the extract of Corchorus olitorius L. to remove solids, and is formulated as cosmetic lotion, gel, water-soluble liquid, cream, essence, or O/W(oil-in-water) or W/O(water-in-oil) formulation.

Abstract: The effect of different concentrations of Cassia alata crude aqueous leaf extract on the germination ofCorchorus olitorius was investigated. All concentrations of C. alata aqueous leaf extract (10, 30, 50, 75 and 100% C) used in this study caused significant (P < 0.05) decrease in the total percentage and germination rate of C. olitorius. Similarly, all concentrations of this extract significantly (P < 0.05) inhibited radicle elongation in C. olitorius. Pre-soaking of C. olitorius seeds in C. alata crude aqueous leaf extract led to an increase in the lag-phase period preceding germination of the seeds in a concentration-dependent manner. The total percentage and rate of germination decreased as extract concentration increased. All concentrations caused a consistent decrease in absolute rate and percentages of germination compared to the control. Key words: Cassia alata, Corchorus olitorius, aqueous extract, germination.

Abstract: Corchorus olitorius is a widely consumed indigenous green leafy vegetable in Nigeria, however the consumption of its fruit is less known. This study was designed to determine the nutrient and anti-nutrient composition of raw and cooked C. olitorius fruit. The sensory acceptability of C. olitorius fruit soup was also compared with the commonly consumed C. olitorius leaf soup. Proximate composition, mineral and anti-nutrient analyses of C. olitorius fruit were carried out using standard procedures. Sensory evaluation of soup cooked from C. olitorius fruit and C. olitorius leaves was carried out. Results obtained showed that the raw C. olitorius fruit composed of moisture (84.95%), crude protein (1.58g/ 100g), crude fat (0.20g/ 100g), crude fibre (2.03g/ 100g), ash (2.45g/ 100g), carbohydrate (10.82g/ 100g) and energy (51.4 kcal/100g). Cooked C. olitorius fruit soup had moisture (92.58g/ 100g), crude protein (1.10g/ 100g), crude fat (0.10g/ 100g), crude fibre (1.44g/ 100g), ash (1.08 g/ 100g), carbohydrate (5.14g/ 100g) and energy (34.9 kcal/100g). Both the raw and cooked seed sample contained appreciable amounts of minerals especially calcium and potassium. Among the anti-nutrients determined, tannin value (133mg/ 100g) was highest in the raw C.olitorius fruit sample. Sensory evaluation showed significantly higher overall preference for C. olitorius fruit soup over C. olitorius leaf soup. The consumption of soup made from C. olitorius fruit has nutritional benefits and was also found to be acceptable to consumers. It is recommended that the consumption of C. olitorius fruit soup should be preserved where it is already being consumed and promoted in other parts of Nigeria where it is not well known.
