Abstract: The present study describes the cholesterol absorption by hyperlipidemia atherosclerosis prone (LAP) Japanese quail to address their high susceptibility to experimental atherosclerosis. The apparent cholesterol absorption rate of LAP quail was compared with that of commercially available (CA) Japanese quail. After 14 d of cholesterol feeding by gavage, it was found that the cholesterol excretion of LAP quail was significantly lower than that of CA quail. The fecal excretion of bile acid and fat showed a similar tendency to that as shown with the case of cholesterol. The cholesterol feeding only increased the serum cholesterol level of LAP quail, and this trend holds true for the liver lipid concentration. The expression level of liver cholesterol 7alpha-hydroxylase mRNA showed no difference between LAP and CA strains under the conditions of cholesterol loading. These results showed that the cholesterol absorption by LAP quail is significantly higher than that by CA quail, which may reasonably explain the higher susceptibility of this strain to experimental atherosclerosis.

Abstract: Social influences on vocal development of young birds have been widely studied in oscine songbirds who learn to sing by vocal imitation of conspecifics, mainly male adults. In contrast, vocal development of non-vocal learners such as Galliformes is considered as being under strong genetic influence and independent of the social environment. In this study, we investigated the role of the mother on the vocal development of young Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica). We compared the vocal development of mothered and non-mothered chicks during the first 21 days of life. We analysed the structural changes of two vocalisations: a) the rally call, emitted during long-distance communication and in stressful situations, b) the contact call, emitted during short-distance communication when chicks are in visual and/or auditory contact with congeners. We showed that temporal and spectral structures of the two types of calls changed during development and differed between mothered and nonmothered chicks. These results demonstrate that maternal presence influences the vocal development of the young in the Japanese quail. Even if the adaptive value of such changes was not assessed, these results highlight that plasticity of vocalisations in species considered as non-vocal learners has been underestimated.

Abstract: Electrolytic bilateral lesions of th nuclei habenulae were made in male, adult photostimulated quail. Habenular destruction led to a marked decrease in the plasma thyroxine level (40%), whereas sham operated birds did not differ from controls. This result appears to be somewhat different from those obtained in mammals and the mechanisms of habenular-thyroid interrelationships are unknown.

Abstract: A new plumage color mutation in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) was named light down (LD) from its external appearance at hatching; it was expressed as an incompletely dominant autosomal gene, for which the symbol L is proposed. In the heterozygous neonates, black stripes on the head and back were narrow and yellowish stripes were wide, creating a lighter external appearance than that of the wild type. One-third of the homozygotes, which had creamy down plumules all over the body, died before hatching. All homozygous chicks allowed to hatch showed abnormal behavior and died within 1 week. The LD adults showed slightly diluted pigmentation all over the body, along with an increased number of transversal bars on the back and wing feathers, as compared with the wild type.

Abstract: Day-old quails experimentally infected with Marek's disease (MD) virus of quail origin developed lymphoid tumors. The severity of the disease increased considerably with serial passage. Tumor transplants could be made with cells derived from gross tumors in skeletal muscles, spleen cells, and blood from MD-affected quails. After five to six serial transplants, the tumor could not be transplanted further. Marek's disease tumor-associated surface antigen (MATSA) was demonstrated in lymphoid cells of spleen and peripheral blood lymphocytes of MD-affected quails. The MATSA of quail differed from the MATSA of chicken. Chickens were susceptible to MD virus isolated and propagated in quails.
