Abstract: 3 Abstract: In order to investigate egg weight of two quail strains 2550 eggs of Japanese quail (Coturnix japanese) and 1975 eggs of Range quail (Coturnix ypisilophorus) were weighted individually at three age groups (first group: 60-145, second group: 145-230, and last group: 300-385 days of age). Body weights of two strains were not significantly different (p>0.05). Body weights at 60 days age were significantly different (p 0.05). Egg weight of Japanese quails and Range quails were 11.23±0.03 and 11.17±0.05 respectively which were not significantly different (p>0.05). Effects of the interaction of strain, age and sex for egg weight and body weight were significantly different (p<0.01). Minimum and maximum egg weight for Japanese quail were 7.08 and 13.84gr respectively, however these records were 7.01 and 13.84gr for Range quail. Individual variation of in two strains for eggs weight were significantly different (p<0.01).

Abstract: Hexachlorobenzene (HCB), beta-naphthoflavone (BNF), or phenobarbital (PB) was administered to Japanese quail to determine their effects on hepatic porphyrin levels and drug-metabolizing enzymes While HCB increased porphyrin levels, PB slightly reduced them, and BNF had no effect HCB was an excellent inducer in quail, increasing the specific content of cytochrome P-450 to levels similar to those produced by BNF Additional similarities between HCB- and BNF-treated quail included a comparable hypsochromic absorption shift in the CO-reduced difference spectra of cytochrome P-450 and similar effects on the activities of cytosolic glutathione S-transferase (GSH-t), biphenyl hydroxylase (BPH), and ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) However, a differential response to HCB and BNF treatment was seen in the activities of hepatic NADPH-cytochrome P-450 reductase, epoxide hydrolase, GSH-t (microsomal), aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase (AHH), and ethoxycoumarin O-deethylase (ECOD) The activities of NADPH-cytochrome P-450 reductase, AHH, and ECOD following treatment with HCB were similar to those found after dosing with PB HCB caused a pattern of induction that was distinct from either BNF or PB and appeared to be a "mixed-type" inducer The rapidity of the HCB-induced porphyrogenic response of Japanese quail, as compared to mammals, may provide unique advantages for making correlations between the in vivo metabolism of haloaromatic hydrocarbons and their effects on porphyrin metabolism

Abstract: The avian perivitelline layer, an extracellular matrix homologous to the zona pellucida (ZP) of mammalian oocytes, is composed mainly by zona pellucida gene family glycoproteins. Our previous studies in Japanese quail have demonstrated that the matrix's components, ZP3 and ZPD, are synthesized in ovarian granulosa cells. Another component, ZP1, is synthesized in the liver. Recently, we demonstrated that another minor constituent, ZP2 is produced in the oocytes of the immature follicles. In the present study, we report the isolation of complementary DNA encoding quail ZP4 and its expression and origin in the female birds. By ribonuclease protection assay and in situ hybridization, we demonstrated that ZP4 transcripts were transcribed in the oocytes of small white follicles. The expression level of ZP4 decreased dramatically during follicular development, and the highest expression was observed in the small white follicles. Western blot analysis using the specific antibody against ZP4 indicated that the immunoreactive 58.2 kDa protein was present in the lysates of the small white follicles. These results demonstrate for the first time that the avian ZP4 is expressed in the oocyte, and that the expression pattern of the gene is similar to that of ZP2.
